I'm nearly finished with my precision/SPR'ish build, and I'm now looking to go shorter (just not sure how short). If I don't go the NFA route, an M4 clone might be a fun project. So my question is, how careful do you have to be about pining and welding on a flash hider yourself? As in if I have the parts in my possession, am I at any risk of getting in trouble from the BATF? I'm capable of the process and I hate the idea of paying someone else to do something I'd enjoy doing and can do.

Thanks in advance.

The ATF has how to do it spelled out in their P&P. Just make sure you follow that and your good to go. Obviously the most popular barrel for this use is the 14.5 with something that would put you over the required 16 inches, something like an extended A2 or YHM phantom. There are plenty of end devices to choose from to put you over 16 inches.

14.7 is a good way to go as well.

16" is even a better way to go.  No ATF hassles, no pinning/welding, easy future maintenance.  Is 1.5" shorter really worth it to you?
