However one thing I did not like about the Lilja's were the gas port sizing. It is grossly over-gassed in my opinion and experience. The blanks were Lilja but chambering was done at Compass Lake and I am assuming to a smaller gas port sizing.

Here's one at 200 yards - a bit of dialing turrets and stuff but not sure why I was shooting up there since it's been so long. I think I might've shot out the red center and chose another area.

I'm glad you mentioned the port sizing. Their spec sheet shows a port of 0.080 which seems pretty large for a 16" barrel with a carbine-length gas system. I was not sure if this was the actual spec, the result of the Wylde chamber (it has been alleged on TOS that port sizing is only one variable determining gas pressure in the system, where chamfering can also influence it; I'm not sure how true that is), or something else.

Not trying to start a gas port size debate, but who wants a $500 barrel that beats the hell out of the system? I suppose there are always heavier buffers and adjustable gas blocks.

Here's the Lilja M4-Navy schematic:

I had to use an H3 buffer in mine.

This is the reason I am looking at the Krieger for my next recce or purchasing the Lilja blank and sending it off to compass lake.

When I bought my Lilja M4-Navy barrel, I was curious about the .080 spec.  I had a discussion with Dan Lilja's son, Carson, on the subject.  He says they did make complete barrels for Navy NWCS-Crane, and that they also sent blanks to Compass Lake, presumably because the order was too large for them to handle on their own within the time of the contract.   I was very curious about the spec on the port.   He says that .080 and a carbine location has always been in the drawings he has access to but does not know whether this was original or changed at some point.  He says information on the original port size choice has been "lost in the vapors of time."

What I can say is that the barrel has not required a heavier buffer on my build, is ejecting flawlessly with everything from M855 to some lighter target handloads (52 grain FB Bergers and 52 SMKs) for 100 yards, and with 70 grain fairly hot high BC Berger VLDs for distance shooting, as well as my normal hunting (ie pretty warm) Barnes 62 grain TSX.  All but the 70 grain VLDs were previously developed in a 5.56 chambered 16" carbine and run fine in the Wylde chamber.   I have no sense of the rifle not being smooth in operation .  While it is admittedly overgassed for M855 5.56, it is not tearing up case rims or showing other signs of excessive bolt velocity.   In fairness, I now shoot M855 only for access to the once fired cases, and my handloads, except for the Barnes hunting loads and a long range VLD load, tend to be closer to .223 velocity and pressure.  I only have about 80 rounds down the new tube, so only time will tell.

I don't plan to run a can on this rifle and appreciate the issues that might present..

I don't know if the Wylde chamber or chamfer of the port had or has any influence on the port size decision.  It's running fine and I'm of the mind that it is better to be a bit overgassed as long as function is not impaired, cases are extracted and ejected normally with no evidence of weapon wear and, from my perspective, case life for reloading is not diminished.

The build, as currently configured is below, still a work in progress.

I was running MK262 in mine and getting case head swipes but it was a shooter for sure and once I got the H3 in there it was running like a top.

Nice rifle.  That Trek is a good little can.  My old man has one on a 10.5 LMT upper, and it's real nice.  The price is right, too.

I'm stuck out in California, and I miss my cans like a motherfucker.

Nice pictures and nice stick. Yours inspired me to get back on the recce train.

The Trek is a good can. Robust and relatively small. It wasn't something I was planning on getting but they were being sold for $295 on Gunbroker last year. I've got an AEM5 in jail so this will hold me over until then.

Thanks.  Yeah, my old man picked up one of the $295 gunbroker deals.  Can't beat it for the money.  You'll love the AEM5, too.

LOL.  I have a friend that has his hunting gun set up like that and I asked him and he said it was fine.   My cheekbones get in the way.  If I lay my head nearly 90 degrees I can do it.  But that's dumb.  Everyone's face is different.  If you move that front ring back some you could move the optic forward if you need to also.  You probably know that but I don't see how you can see through it that far back.  You transfer it off of a bolt gun or something?

Nah, just had the lows sitting in a drawer and was hoping it would be doable, looks pretty slick but function is crap. Mediums will be perfect.

I was so wrapped up in the scope, I failed to tell you how nice your rifles are.   Super great!!!!!!!  I like the paint on the one.  I'm dipping my toe into painting.  I had my daughter paint a grip today.  LOL.  I may do a full lower.  I"m just not sure I feel like it's a necessity.  But it can be fun.  And plus I like colors that aren't that popular on here.  Did the grip in OD.

But yeah, the 12Mod1 is saweeeeeeeeeeet.

Won't the scope still be too far back for good eye relief?  I can't use separate rings on the short AR15/M4 upper.  Went with a one piece cantilever to get both right height and forward enough for eye relief. Everybody has a different head position, though.

Just completed and taken out today. I think I have a new favorite.

Upper:

- BCM upper
- BCM BCG
-  Barrel is a Spikes - Lothar Walthar Fluted 16 inch - Not cheap, but it's a beauty. I don't care much for the stainless look, so had ADCO coat it while they pinned the GB
- SLR Ion 13.7" rail - This is also my new favorite rail. Went through three m-lok rails before I found one as this as the KMR. Very light also.
- BCM Mod 3 CH

- Nightfore 2.5-10x32 in a Bobro mount - Will probably switch out the Bobro for an LT104. The Bobro is nice, but heavy and wider than I like.
-Harris Bipod in Larue Mount

Lower:

- LMT Complete Lower - My go too
- B5 SOPMOD - I love my LMT SOPMOD, but heavy
- Larue MBT Trigger - went with the heavy spring

Although it's a bit on the short side barrel wise, this combo is sub minute. The SWFA 1-6 is phenomenal glass, but it's my daughter's. I'm planning on dedicated glass being the primary arms 1-6x. I'll have to see them both side by side when I get it though. But as a do it all Recce inspired build I'm happy

That is great!!!!  Can I ask what that weighs in at?

I gotta get some new recce pics.  I've posted it before, but figured I'd contribute something.

Took the Lilja out to around 750-800 yards at a 12"x24" plate.  CBC 77gr performed pretty well.

I actually tried weighing it and my cheapie fish scale gave my readings between 9.5 and 10.5 depending on how it was held..... either way I'm fine with it. I'll be getting a PA 1-6X and is substantially lighter that the swfa.

G&R Tactical in 2014 and 2015.

My buddy brought out his SPR today...18" Noveske, KAC RAS, Nightforce 2.5-10x32.  The thing shoots frickin' lasers.  I've seen lots of dudes talking shit about the x24, but we couldn't discern any real difference between the two.  Both are fantastic scopes.

Kudos to USNGUNS! I love your weapons & am jealous of the range (even if commifornia).  I threw a 1.25-4 on, zeroed & shot this group suppressed @ 100. Not too bad for me, using 4x.

I have one of each (x32 and x24) and other than the turret clicks being way better on the x32 they seem about the same to me too.

Got to finally go shooting at a non-range and shoot the recce a bit more 'actively'

Have to say I'm in love with this rifle
