For those interested, please see the attached. It is an experiment conducted involving penetration of drywall and pine boards. Thanks. www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=5&t=299988 |

I think everyone has taken DocGKR's comments way too far. Even early on in the article in The Police Marksman he says something to the effect: Some 5.56mm/.223 rounds MAY offer reduced penetration, threat of leaving the structure, etc. Then there are some profiles of what various .223/5.56mm bullets to gelatin after passing through an interior wall. M193 tends to not break up after passing through an interior wall and does not fragment in gelatin after passing through, so it penetrates just as a pistol round would, however it's a teeny .22 hole for the most part. Some of the others like M855 and 68gr OTMs, etc. passed through the interior wall but fragmented very early penetrating only 8" or less. No bullet is going to magically turn into a cotton ball after passing through an interior wall. What HAS been said is that 5.56mm/.223 rounds are not ANY MORE dangerous than a pistol round, which was contrary to popular belief at the time. No one ever said they were less dangerous than pistol rounds for sure, just POSSIBLY less dangerous or on par w/ pistol rounds. Now as for OP's testing.. thank you, I find your testing and results quite interesting! Neat rig too! |

No person that I'm aware of that has actually studied 5.56 terminal ballistics extensively has EVER made the claim that 5.56 won't penetrate interior walls. Unfortunately, it seems that reading comprehension is not very high-level among a percentage of the folks who have read the articles, and they've erroneously come to that conclusion. What those articles say is that military 5.56 loads (meaning M193 and M855) have LESS WOUND POTENTIAL after penetrating an interior wall then do most pistol rounds of 9mm and above, or of 00 Buck shotgun rounds. And that is indeed the case. That is NOT the same as "it won't penetrate a wall." We cover this extensively and carefully in the Ammo Oracle... -Troy |
