Okay been lurking for a bit and waiting to start my first build.

This is going to be a range toy and SHTF gun.  It will be mainly for me but wife will shoot too.  Chances are if she likes it, then 2nd build will be for her.

So here is the breakdown.  Suggestions welcome

LOWER

BOUGHT
Palmetto State Armory Lower ($80+ 10 shipping + 15 FFL fee)
ATI Scorpion Pistol Grip ($30 shipped)
Magpul PTS ASAP  ($20 shipped)
Lower build kit from PSA  with Magpul STR stock and buffer kit/LPK  ($150 with free shipping)
Oversized Mag release button ($20 with shipping)
JP reduced power spring kit ($15 with shipping)

UPPER

WANT

PSA upper
16" hammer forged barrel mid-length gas
BCM FA BCG
YHM phantom flash supressor
YHM low pro gas block
A.R.M.S. #71 flip sight set
Rifle length Handguard
I like the looks of the RRA  Advanced Half Quad but hear that weight is a bit much (no problem for me but might for wife)
Leaning towards the YHM Todd Jarret series handguard.

What do you guys thing of this rig?

That sounds like a blast to me for what it's worth, I just posted the same question to the folks here for my first ar build.  The todd jarret is nice I fondled one last week at the county gunshow

OK.  I got all the parts for the lower in.  I forgot to add that I ordered a JP reduced power spring kit for this build.

I have a question for those that have the PSA trigger.  I was reading about smoothing out the "gritty" feel of the regular AR triggers.  When I looked at the PSA trigger I got, it appeared that it was smoothed out already.  Is this the case or does it need it to be done?

Also I missed how to post pics with image hosting them.  Anyone care to help a newbie out on this?

I can attest to the trigger of the PSA. My midlength was rather smooth when I first assembled my lower but after a few hundred rounds it started to feel like breaking glass. I thought I was just lucky.

Got it together today.  All went well.  Only had to chase the pivot pin detent down 4 times.  Like the look and feel of it.  The safety color fill is only crayon.  After a while of getting myself, wife and kids used to the layout I will remove it.  What do you guys think?

Other side and staked castle nut.  It was a little bit harder to do because the Magpull ASAP stuck out further than the castle nut.

The trigger is smooth so far.  No grit feel. I did clean it up and the JP springs make the trigger even better compared to the other single stage trigger ARs I have shot.

Anything that is Magpul PTS is made for airsoft. Thats why it is slightly cheaper. You will have problems with fit and function if you use airsoft parts on your AR. I would stay away from anything that is " extended " or  " enhanced " until you get familiar with the controls of the AR and find out what you like. I think that if you tried the standard mag release you would prefer it over the large one. Just my .02

Good catch.  I did not even notice the PTS on that.  Frick.  I screwed up and did not read the whole listing.  Will be replacing that before Im finished with the upper.

As for the mag release, I still have the milspec one if I change my mind.

Thanks again for the airsoft catch.

No problem man. When you buy things from ebay ( which I sometimes do ) you have to be so, so careful. To tell you the truth I have to really hold myself back from buying things off of auction sites. I have been burned to many times. It's embarassing. Almost all Magpul products on Ebay are PTS ( airsoft ). There are not that many sellers who sell the real deal. The Equipment Exchange here is your best bet. People in general are honest and offer items at great prices. If you need info on where to find the products you need, for less, just ask any member here and they can point you in the right direction. Good luck on your first build!
