As a newbie to the AR-15 I've been going through this entire board getting as much information as I possibly can before starting my build.  And, of course, I have a couple of questions.

1. What basic tools will I need to do the build?
2. Will a Stag or Ameetec lower be a good match for a DPMS upper?

I've decided to go with the DPMS kit from Del-Ton, but I'm interested in a good lower that fits tightly, doesn't cost an arm and a leg and that is available now.  It's hard to find a vendor that has an RRA lower in stock.

Anyway, I've been impressed with the level of knowledge on this board and hope at some point in the future I'll be able to contribute to the knowledge base.

Steve, see the sticky at the top of the page on lower assembly, it will tell you what tools you will need.   Since you are getting a DPMS upper why not get a DPMS lower, you can get it in the same price range as the others.  I can recommend CMMG for the lower, but there are other vendors also that carry them.  As far as the others, I can't comment on finish match, but the Ameetec I had was nice.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, FA-Gunner.

I thought about the DPMS lower, but I've read some good things about the Stag and Ameetec lowers.  Perhaps, I'll just go DPMS entirely and not worry about it anymore.

My first AR build was a complete DPMS.  It was a nice shooter, went together easily and everything matched.  I traded it for a pistol, in the heat of the moment, should have kept it.  Also had a Ameetec, which a assembled with a DPMS lower parts kit and RRA M-4 type stock.  I traded it for a Maadi AK before I ever got around to finishing the build.  Both were good receivers, I don't think you will have any issues with any of those.  I'm getting the funds saved up to do the same thing you are.  What upper are you going to get, what are you plans?

I'm getting the 16" M4 1x7 twist chromed lined barrel flat-top upper with an M4 6 position stock.

I haven't decided on the little things like sights, although, I'm leaning toward the Troy #40 or #40L BUIS and a YHM flip-up front sight, and the EOTech holographic sights.

You will probably want to stick with a DPMS lower or another brand like Grizzly that is teflon coated like your DPMS upper.  If you don't the color match will be off a bit.

I haven't seen anything about the Grizzly lowers.
