I would agree with AR-15s, for the most part. But with carbine length AR-10s it seems like at the least changing buffer weights and springs can help band aid an over-gas issue if you don't want to put a AGB on it.

I think using an AGB is the way to go, it fixes the problem, not just a band aid to try to compensate for the issue.

Is the 16" SFAR a carbine gas system? I thought it was mid length

Has anyone tried the Strike Industries Ultimate Dust cover?
Forgot to order the MagPul when I ordered my new handguard. Trying to find an alternative that may be on the shelf locally.
Thanks

I’m late to the game, sounds like geissile rail and rifle speed gas block solves most of the problems?

Is there a rail compatibility chart?

ETA: this thread has less life than a cemetary.

CMT hybrid rail dropped in perfect, zero modification required.  Riflespeed gas block clearance is good.  I'm an idiot and didnt order a straight gas tube so can't speak to shooting performance yet.

Everyone using standard plunger size on their riflespeed?

I shot my sfar 16" 308 suppressed recently, first time out and it actually cycled 100% on gas setting 4 with the rifle speed gas block.
Im actually impressed by, how much recoil reduction there is.

Did I miss an announcement that the SFAR was being discontinued?

It's no longer showing up on the site under the various model menus, and if you try to go straight to the SFAR page via a Google search you get this:

And doing a model search on their site results in no matches found:

That's weird. Certainly seems like a weird time to nuke a product with no info. Hopefully they are just updating info. I don't think these companies realize how tuned in people are. You can have hundreds of thousands of people churning up a rumor mill before Doug from IT is done with his website update.

Read a post this morning on the SFAR Facebook group from someone that sent theirs back for warranty work in November or December. Initially Ruger was going to send him a new rifle, but then they contacted him earlier this month and advised that they're no longer producing the SFAR and parts aren't available either. If they were going to introduce a Gen2 version, seems like it would have made an appearance at SHOT last week.

I saw where they discontinued the AR-556 rifles also.

Apparently Ruger has decided to base all their AR stuff on their recent Anderson parts/manufacturing acquisition. Too bad, because I really like my SFAR and two AR-556's that I have. If I had wanted Anderson rifles, I would have bought them when they were still in business.

Thanks, Ruger...

The rumor is they’re moving production to the Anderson facility.

I’ve had bad luck with every Anderson product I’ve owned so I’m glad I bought before this if true.

Wow.  Glad I got the 6.5 CM version then, that model runs reliably with decent accuracy.  The 16" .308's appear more spotty.

Apparently support is going to get hard

Well I'm glad I never sent mine in. The sfar has so much potential but just not enough execution. The lack of parts is really unfortunate.

I hope they release a next gen small frame. Been reading this thread and thinking about one for a while. There's nothing wrong with my 2A Xanthos build so I never did buy one. It is surprising that Ruger wiped it from their site.

Google AI says it is not discontinued so it probably is.

Most parts on it are not proprietary, for the ones that are POF is still making theirs.

Ruger is known for changing platforms configurations without much change to the platform.  Gen 2 could literally be a new corrected handguard, some cosmetic milled cuts, and a paint job.  How many times did they do that to the 22/45 and 10/22 line of guns.  Maybe a piston coming our way?

But please, Ruger, keep the main parts so we can stay with the platform.  No need to change the barrel & BCG, which would also keep the receiver geometry the same.  Just change the look from the outside and do a SBR option.

Don't put it past them. We will probably get a standard AR-10 with a nitride carrier, nitride button cut barrel. It will be a rebrand of Anderson's junk. Ruger is making everything as cheap as possible. Just like axing the Scout rifle and replacing it with the American series, which is hot garbage and disposable.

For the money they were hard to beat, the 20" versions seemed to function fine. Mine has been good so far. Noone else is offering a CHF nitride barrel in 6.5CM that might actually last more than a few thousand rounds. The other AR-10s in that rice category are hot garbage.

Nope - We used all the extensions to build barrels (20ea) then realized all the Ruger SFAR bolts are not the same and not completely interchangeable with our extensions.
We used 4ea factory SFAR bolts to reverse engineer our extensions, but that clearly was not a large enough lot size to cover all the bolt variations.  At that point, we killed off our SFAR line before it really got started.

Tony , is this QC issue outside the norm?

I've wondered if warranty work based on a botched launch is what doomed the SFAR .

I don't know what the norm is.  We never had a print for the bolt, so maybe they run some big tolerance swings and make the extensions loose enough to cover the variation.

But they do not have all the parts available. Like barrels. I took mine back, and will only shoot 7.62x51 going forward. .308 has excessive pressure problems with my barrel.

POF has a base model (LMR Base) of their small frame .308 that is competitively priced with the Ruger.  So there is an option if Ruger doesn't get the product line going again or in a timely fashion.  They are in the low $1000 range.

I had my eye on a few inexpensive POF 12.5" small frame .308 and was waiting on a commission check.  Of course, the second it hit that price went up by 40%.  I'm assuming the distributor had a sale as several places had it at that price and they all dried up at the same time.  I really don't need it, so I'm not feeling too bad.  But I had a PTR-91 that was cut and pinned to an OAL of 16" (14.5" barrel) that I always liked.  I foolishly traded it for the next toy and have been regretting it ever since.  So I really should just grab something and scratch the itch.

So I need a new barrel or someone to re cut the chamber of the barrel I have so that my rifle will function. As far as ruger told me and what I can tell is there is little to no throat and the chamber is too tight/short/rough. Does anyone know anyone willing or able to solve this?

Tried the HBI regulator in my 16" SFAR .  Would not eject/lock back on setting 4 or less. Setting 5 would leave the brass in the chamber, rim ripped off.

Added an H3 buffer, it will run on setting 5. Did not try it suppressed.

With the factory regulator, this SFAR runs on setting 2.  Thought I could get better adjustabilty with the HBI.

I too am not super thrilled with the HBI regulator.  Yes it has 5 positions.  But 3 of them are so far out of range and not useful, that it really isn't that much more useful than factory. I run it. Because in my 20"SFAR CM I find position 4 a litte more optimal sized than the closest on on the factory.  But even at position 5, I have some mild loads that won't cycle.

I will say, the 6.5 Creedmoor 20" version of this gun is pretty good.  The 16" .308... I'm not so sure of.

And Glock reps said they’d never make OD green frames again and that a single stack 9 wasn’t ever going to happen at the launch of the .380 Glock 42.   Magpul said only no more colored mags other black and now they’re making OD and MCT and maybe some other color.  Colt said they’d never make a piston rifle.  I could go on and on.

Point I’m making is gun and accessory manufacturers say all kinds of things that turn out not to be true.  Not sure if it’s ignorant reps or salespeople, or they just like to keep things tight lipped.  So just because you hear something from some random person at Ruger, don’t be so sure they’re giving you the real truth.
