Decided I need to fufill my responsibility as an American citizen and get an AR-15.

Here is what I am thinking if you could give me some pointers it would be great.

Rifle uses: This will be a general plinker. I have a shotgun for HD and a 25-06 for varmints.  If something bad was to happen it would be thrown into action most likely as well but thats one of those out there  IFs.  May see some 'yote action if the bolt gun gets boring. I want it to be RELIABLE nothing angers me more than having to work on a gun when I'm wanting to shoot it.

I will probably shoot surplus rounds mainly. As a plinker I have no need for Vmax rounds.

Here is where you guys can help.

I have thought about building my own. I enjoy tinkreing and will have a surplus of time over the next three months.  However with my very basic wants not sure I would accomplish much.  Your opinions on building one for what I am wanting?

Any opinions on what models to look at for what I'm wanting? Not sure if I will need a Chrome  barrel since I am shooting surplus but if so that basicly leaves me with building or a Bushy. Correct? I saw Olympic offered a basic model that was reasonably priced.

Anyone have online sites that are reasonably priced?

Wait and see what happens in Sept.? Not sure if there will be a price drop and not overly sure that I "must" have any of the "evil" features.

Thanks guys.

I would start to buy parts, but would wait to see what happens in another few months before I did everything.  I would go with a Bushmaster barrel, Oly upper & lower receiver, Rock River Arms lower parts kit and adjustable stock, and probably a Bushie or RRA bolt & B/C.

If you are looking to build, this would get you a solid carbine, and would save you some decent scratch.

PS- You want the chrome barrel.

You can buy gun kits less the lower reciever from model 1 sales and J&T distributing. And then buy your self a lower reciever and you can put together a pretty decent gun and still have some scratch for a scope or red dot. It also sounds like you want a 16 inch barrel nice and compact. good luck and welcome to the AR-itch
