I just put together a carbine and I'm having problems with the first round not extracting, resuting in the second round double feeding on top of the spent cartridge. All subsequent cartridges extract fine. Any suggestions? This is a retro carbine clone built on an original Colt A1 upper which was refinished. The bolt carrier group is brand new from Bushmaster, and the barrel is a new Bushmaster lightweight barrel. The buffer and spring are both new as well. I'm thinking that maybe the thing just needs to be broken in. I hope it will get better once the refinish is worn off the interior of the receiver a little bit. Any ideas?

I am not a pro but I like to take a stab... someone will confirm or deny what I say...
Breaking it in is undoubtedly a good idea. Shoot a few hundred rounds with it well lubed and see if you still have problems. Is it leaving the spent case in the chamber? what does the bullet look like where the extractor contacts it? (ripped to hell or barely nicked?) |
| Pull the charging handle back and lock it in the open position. Put a loaded mag in and let the charging handle fly forward loading a round. Put weapon on safe. Pull the charging handle back again hopefully ejecting the round. Try different ammo. Lube buffer tube. |
| I'll try cycling the charching handle like you suggested. As far as the brass, it's in pretty good shape once it's fired. Granted, I was shooting some reloaded stuff, but haven't had problems with it in any of my other rifles. The first casing partially ejects before double feeding the second round. I'll play around with it some this weekend. Oh yeah, and this is happening with two different mags, niether of which was fully loaded. |
