I have a modulus jig, and have been using the recommended ridgid router with it. I've got 4 lowers under it, and each time a end mill snaps on it. I have the speed set at 4, as I emailed ridgid, and they told me it was the ideal speed. What am I doing wrong?

I have found the problem with the router jigs, is they are simply to small and the speed is to much, with the smaller bits you have to take smaller bites of the material you are hogging out, I have a Modulus, a 5D and a 80% jig and I have broke end mill bits with all of them, when you go smaller than a 3/8 end mill, they are going to strain and they are going to break, it is not you are doing anything wrong, it is they are small and they have to much leverage on side load against them.

Just my experience.

Interesting as how on the Modulus website it says how their end mill was specially designed yada yada yada...

Under the FAQ:
"the end mill will outlast the jig if used properly. It will break well before it will wear out. Modulus Arms as well as many customers have completed dozens of lowers with a single end mill. The end mill can break if the process is rushed or the instructions are not followed."

A while ago (3-4 years ago) I was thinking about getting a mini mill to do 80%, but decided not to, because I would only be doing AR's. Then the router jigs came out and picked one up asap.

I don't know if you have any experience with the harbor freight mini mill or the Grizzly G0704, but any insight would help. Thanks

I have also been using the modulus arms jig and have done 3 or 4 lowers now on the original end mill. I use the dewalt palm router that they currently recommend and mill on the increments given. I don't know why you are going through bits the way you are unless you're trying to force the cut rather than letting the bit do the work.

I have a modified Grizzly 8689, which in its stock form is pretty much the same as the Harbor Freight mill.

I have the Modulus Arms original jig.  I take out small bites at a time.......1/2 of the increments they recommend.  I have never broken an end mill, but I have chipped a tooth on 2 of them.  i continued to use the end mills with the missing tooth and they still worked.  After doing 2-3 lowers, you get much better at "the feel".

Don't force the cut, slow and steady wins the race. Use LOTS of cutting oil.

I built a milling fixture for my DMG 5axis NC mill, one set up and 17min later the 80% lower is done. Took about 45min to design and 1hr to cut the fixture
It use to take 3 setups and 1hr, 15min to machine and most of the time was spent setting up and picking up.

This +1.

I broke one end mill when I first started doing lowers.  After that I got "the feel".  I've done a whole bunch since then w/o breaking one.

Agree completely. I have a Modulus HD jig also and if it starts to chatter a lot, you are either taking too deep a bite or are hogging it. Take very small counterclockwise circular bites.
