I recently completed a build of a 16" barrel, carbine gas system using a Colt A2 upper. I have a 4 rail free float hand guard installed.

I am thinking of installing a scope soon, and did not want to deal with the high mounting on top of the carrying handle. I also don't want to shell out for a whole new good quality flat-top upper.
I saw an image in a magazine a while back showing an A2 upper where someone had cut off the carrying handle at the front attachment to the upper and just forward of the rear sight. I presume to save weight. The cuts were all cleaned up pretty well, and the upper repainted to where it looked like it came from the factory that way. They now had just the original A2 sight post sticking up from the upper receiver.
I was considering doing this. To mount the scope, I was looking for a long rail that would clamp to the upper rail of the handguard, then hang back over the top of the upper. The rail would end up needing to be approx 8-10" long. Does anyone make a rail like this?
This may sound like a crazy scheme, but I think it would end up saving me a bit of cash in the end, and I wouldn't have an extra upper laying around.
Any thoughts on this? Would it adversely effect the rifle?

It would be MUCH easier to just change out the upper receivers.  Buy a CMT flattop with or without the T-marks ($100).  If you want to swap it out yourself, you will need: armorer's wrench, upper rec vice block, vice.  Otherwise, any company like ADCO and others will do it for around $25.  Then, you can sell your A2 (unmodified) for around $90.  So there you are, flattop upper and only out ~$35.

Plus don't forget with the A2 sight where it is, you will have to mount the scope above that to get the proper sight image. Picture yourself holding your head an inch above the stock looking through a scope

Do yourself a favor, get a flat-top upper and sell your A2 upper on the EE.

Good idea. Thought it would be cheaper my way. Whew! No need to bring out the heavy tools now.
