I see some pistol builds with a standard buffer tube wrapped in twine, paracord or some kind of nylon rope. What's the legality of doing this vs. having to buy a dedicated pistol tube?

It depends on who you ask, who catches you with it,  and what the local prosecutor wants to do.The BATFE said it was OK, in the past.

Perfectly legal as long as spare stocks have a legal home.

I para wrapped mine to stop all the chicken littles from squawking.
