I know I've seen threads about packing ammo cans and other small waterproof containers with magazines for storage, but I can't find them.  Somebody got them bookmarked?

Not sure what you are after but the SAW ammo can (commonly called a Fat 50) will hold 28 in 4 rows of 7, plus 2 across the back all standing up.

There were a couple of pelican cases that worked pretty well IIRC.  I wish I could find the threads.

"Fat Fifty" cans work for me like a charm.

I am thinking about a stack of those MTM boxes... they are pretty cheap and light.

The SAW can or more commonly known as the "fat" .50 can works well.  Holds 30 magazines.

Can anyone report the weight of a box with the magazines loaded?

A loaded 30 AR mag (aluminum) weighs a little over one pound (55 grain bullets).  You are looking at about 31 or 32 pounds plus the can which probably weighs three or four pounds.  I have a fat 50 can but I don't have a scale to weigh it on.

Heavy.

No scale available...

You could put a couple across the top.

You'll also short your self some of you use a few Pmags. You can only fit 28 Pmags. None will fit across the top or at the back. That's with the storage cover attached.

I only have one Pmag.  I wanted to try it out for myself before I jump on the Pmag bandwagon with everyone else.  I guess I'll have to get a few more cans for the new additions of Pmags...

Sorry to bring up an old topic, but I just bought a few (my first two) of the SAW (Fat 50) ammo cans & WOW. I am gonna have to pick up more.

Anyway back to the topic. I just want to add to the total number of mags that'll fit in one of these. I get 34, 4 rows of 7 with 2 in sideways on the end (as mentioned earlier in here), then I laid 2 30rd mags flat on top of the others, with 2 20rd mags laid flat inline with the other 2 30rdrs. I store mine empty, but if they were loaded it'd be 1000 rds of ammo in one can, & probably pretty darn heavy. It is a perfect fit.

I'm sure others have done it, but I did not see it mentioned here.

It will also hold two more 30s and two 20s flat on the top.

32 x 30 = 960

2 x 20 = 40

960 + 40 = 1000 rounds stored in loaded mags in 1 SAW can.

Is there an echo in here? Seems like I just said that.

What is the width of the fat fifty?  I purchased some cans at the last gun show and they were advertised as 50cal cans, but mine don't look fat to me.

Thanks,

Check the yellow painted markings on the side of the can.  This photo from above shows what I mean:

SAW cans are unique in that they only are used for one type of ammo - SAW ammo packs at a total of (I think) 800 rounds of linked 5.56.  What is called a .50 can has been used for a number of different types of ammo and could have any of a number of markings.

A pelican 1200 hold ten 30 rounders or eight 30 rounders and four 20 rounders perfectly!
Just throw a silica pack in there and it's already air and water tight.
Older pic (sorry) but you get the idea.

The picture seems to have dissapeared, any chance of re-hosting it? I'd like to see what it looks like.

Here's a couple of mine with 10 thirty rounders in them.  Don't have the 20round mags though.  And sorry about the crappy pic.  hinking.gif
