A couple of screws hold them in.  They can be easily removed and reattached when the rail is off the rifle.  They can not be re-installed when the rail is on a rifle.

Ahh thanks Postal.  Knew I could count on you, sir.

Well the upper and parts were dropped off, ballistic looked at the thread on my LMT barrel and said they were good to go! No damage.

I stopped by this place on the way home since it was right across the street, but nothing there is 'for clones'

very cool love seeing guns from the sandbox, howd u like the grippod? is that part of the sopmod?

Speaking only for myself, I love the Grip pod.  The grip fills the hand much better than the KAC, it's fast to deploy and it is as steady as it needs to be.  When your heart is pounding and you're out of breath (there ain't no AIR up here!) it's a great tool to help you get on target quicker.  The only things I'm not fond of is the large wingnut  and the lack of a recessed pocket for a tape switch.  Because of that the swtich gets some torque on it from just walking around, thus I've got to replace the velcro on the grip every couple of months or so as it tends to get pulled off.  Never had that problem with a Mk 46 (TD grip).  And no, it is not part of the SOPMOD kit, but it is a Service Common item for the both the Army and Marine Corps and thus it is available for many SOCOM units through their Service supply channels.

Trust me I noticed all of that too. They look damn near like used mil rifles on display for a showing but those pieces stand out...where the hell an armory got a pws556 fh is beyond me.

None of them have a rear buis either but that's fairly normal for those optic configs.

Looking at the above picture reminds me of the last batch of M16A4s that we got.  They came from a recon unit, and were––shall we say––customized.  The BN armorer almost went into seizures at seeing ambidextrous controls, Gasbuster charging handles, paint jobs, etc.  Our POG-iest of POG units threw a fit over all the unauthorized stuff on those 'A4s.  One of them had a Vortex flash suppressor on it, I shit you not.  So as to where an armory came up with a FC556, things like that can happen if you're in a unit with an outside-the-wire mindset and a cool armorer.

I was envious.  I'm still fighting vainly to store our weapons with the optics, PEQs, etc. left on.  And to mount BUIS on all of the weapons as opposed to letting them sit uncounted in a drawer.

Soldier's preference.  As stated many times before in this thread, there is no standard, just like the Recce builds.

Finally got my EOTech 553 in!  I was a little disappointed that it doesn't have the SU-231 markings on the side, but it's still great.  I'm going to have to get used to it sitting higher than my 512, which now resides on my S&W M&P 15-22, which is set up to be a clone of my M4 for budget training.

I'll give a shout out to the Mk18 clone thread, it inspired me to make this one.  Since I live in a non-NFA friendly state, I had to go the M4 route.  As I've discussed in earlier posts, my 3 variances were for the BattleComp 2.0 which I love too much to swap out, the Magpul trigger guard to save my finger from the "gap," and the 16" barrel because I didn't want to deal with pinned muzzle-devices.

So, after $3200 over the last few months, I present my completed, from the ground up, SOPMOD Block II clone

DBAL-I2 might come down the road if I decide that night vision would be a prudent investment, but for now it's unneeded

First off, most of my gear was bought locally from Surplus Ammo and Rainier Arms, so an automatic 9.5% sales tax gets thrown in.  Here's my breakdown:
LE6920: $1150
M4A1 RIS II: $370
Troy Sights: $220
M300A: $270
BattleComp 2.0: $165
Modstock: $95
Mapgpul grip and trigger guard: $35

comes to $2305 x 1.095 = $2524

EOtech: $632 shipped

Grand total: $3156

I know its not an apples to apples comparison because of the SOCOM barrel(and elcan) but how does the RIS II FSP handle compared to the standard RAS?  I've read some complaints that the RIS II plus the FSB made for a heavy or front heavy carbine.

No worse then a "standard" M4A1 type.

It does get in the way for magnified optics, just like a normal FSB does.

For me, the RIS II feels lighter then a standard M4 with KAC RAS.

I think those are a realistic set of goals for a clone thread.   The rail is what really makes you notice it as a RIS II.

Ya your right I don't have the M4A1 RIS II in the correct FDE color.  I just though I could make up for it with the MIL-SPEC lower's

Are any of the block II rifles in use now sporting the DD rail with the front site base cuts like the one pictured above?

I have a colt 6920 that I wouldn't mind having the m4a1 ris handguard on, but I don't want to lose my front site.

Also, what is required to put the ris handguard on a colt 6920? Remove barrel and barrel nut, and then replace with a DD barrel nut or can the stock nut be used?
Link Posted: 7/17/2011 10:19:18 PM EDT

You need to pull the barrel and use the Daniel Defense Nut. You will need to remove the FSB too to get the stock barrel nut off, this can be diificult sometimes.

I've seen a few walking around here w/ the FSB cut out but not as many as with the full length rail and all of those on USASOC supplied weapons.

I believe that might be an airsoft gun, I think I've seen additional pics of it on airsoft sights while researching the SOPMOD Block II.

Either way it looks good, it's one of the pics that inspired me to throw down the money and build my own.  I wish we could find those tan Elcan's without exorbitant prices.

Cool, I finished mine last week, you can see a few pics on page 7. I'm sure I'll have more to come when I get a chance to take outdoor and action pics.  I built it from the ground up to be a clone.  The only place I deviated with parts that you will not see on military Block II's were the trigger guard and BattleComp 2.0.  Other than that, I picked for personal preference but only with parts that have shown up in pics of the real ones.

. . . . you don't have solar panels on yours?

Long story short.  Some time ago when I believed in Eotechs and incan lights, I found out someone made a prototype stock with a battery recharger in it.  You could have a SOPMOD that would charge either an AA battery or a RCR123 on each side.  He offered this to SOCOM but they turned him down as it rains batteries over there.  (Unlike the Corps, where we steal ours from the Army).  I contacted this person and had them make me a one of a kind stock that had a normal storage compartment on one side, and a charger on the other side that could charge 2 RCR123s.(Enough for an Eotech or a Surefire).

But then I moved away from Eotechs due to catastrophic failure.  Moved to the vastly improved LED bulbs.  Found out little things like recharageable 123s can be charged enough to cause various issues in electronics like LEDs and Eotechs as "melting".  Etc.

Also I moved away from the SOPMOD back to my preferred CAR stock.  So this unique prototype usually sits in the bottom of my parts bin.

No pics yet, but planning my build and have a unique question....

I have an Ops Inc 16th model suppressor and it requires approx. 2.25" of free barrel behind the muzzle...Can any of you guys with the 14.5" barrel take pics of the muzzle to the end of the rail with a tape measure there or just measure it for me? I really want to use the 14.5" barrel but won't if i can't run my can on it....I know that the 16" barrel will work, but I'm mainly concerned about the 14.5" rifles.

Thanks

Tom (I'll post pics and edit as I get the pieces, haha)
