Don't know if you know it, but for all of you that don't, those comics come from the Army's "preventive maintenance monthly", which you can get at the link below. Added bonus is you can view the back issues as well, so enjoy.

Whats that neato rail system everybody seems to use for these clones? I know the military uses them too, but I can't tell the difference between knights, midway, et al

The "most correct" for a A4 clone is the KAC M5 RIS system, as the Army and the Marines use them.

[Last Edit: Milla] [#14]
Yup the KAC M5 is what we have in the Marines. We also just got the grip pod, PEQ 15's and ACOGs (reserve units are slow at getting new gear until you are about to deploy )

I really love the ACOG, its such an amazing sight, got to use it for the first time this past week, fired about 1000 rounds with it

Update: I received my KAC rail yesterday and I am very happy with it. I blew most of my Chrismas budget on it but I feel it was worth it. Rock solid.

How much weight does the handguard rail system add?

Hypothetically, if the 20" are for medium to long range shooting rather than CQB, why would there be any reason to mount an entire rail system besides just to add a vertical handgrip?
Link Posted: 11/28/2007 5:34:05 PM EDT
[Last Edit: renesis] [#27]
IR-Illuminator/laser or to mount a night vision device that may take up alot of rail space.  And if I remember correctly the RAS weighs 16-18 oz stripped with no panels or grips on them.

M4 RAS-8.8 (handguard)+2.5(standard nut that remains)2.5 = 11.3 oz
M5 RAS rifle length-14.1+2.5= 16.6 oz
Ras II-11.3+2.5=13.8 oz
FF RAS carbine-7.2 (handguard) + 4.2(nut)=11.4 oz with out panels
FF RAS midlength-10.3+ 4.2 = 14.5 oz
FF RAS long-12 + 4.2 = 16.2 oz
URX carbine -8.6 (handguard) + 0.3 (nut) = 8.9 oz
URX mid -12.7 + 0.3=13 oz
URX long-14.4 + 0.3=14.7 oz
Daniel Defense-8.5 oz short with nut no panels
BMAS
C-MORE-15.8 oz
FIRSH-10.5 ? including nut ?
GG&G forend~16 oz
ARMS SIR - 18.8 oz(#45c)
DPMS 4-rail-14oz
etc.

If can provide data or point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it.

I saw a spreadsheat posted awhile back that had a comparison, but I don't think wieght was included (last time I saw it). Maybe it could be added.

Edited to update provided wieghts for easy reference

Great thread. I got my AR as an early Christmas present a few weeks ago. I got out of the Army in early '99, and at that time we all had A2's. Didn't keep up with the evolution of AR's since then. It wasn't until a few days ago that I figured out that my rifle is an A4 clone. Haven't got an pics yet, but it is built on a DPMS lower reciever, A-2 butt stock, KAC M5 RAS, FN 1/7 5.56 barrel, FN bolt, FA bolt carrier. Shoots very well. Gaining more respect for my son's parts scrounging abilities every day.

No. I sent the barrel out to ADCO to turn it into Gov't profile and when I received it back I noticed this. I thought it was from when they re-parkerized the barrel.

I love the A4 configuration so I say you cannot go wrong doing your own A4 build. And I agree on the stickies. I think every major variation should have their own stickies so you don't have to wade through a ton of posts and pics' to find something specific.

Get pics' when you can, as will I. Though it has been really stormy here lately, so taking decent images is not working out too well.

Was just wondering what type railed hand guards you have on you stag rifle, looking for something similar for my lefty.  Looks great, how’s it holding up??

Thanks,

That is a Knights Armament M5 RAS, you can find them at Operations Parts, MSTN, and a few others. As for holding up, so far so good. It has not been together that long, so I only got a couple hundred rounds through it and have had no hiccups so far.

Did your ACOG's mounting knobs come on that side from the factory?  Or is that personal preference?
