So I removed the adjustable stock on my Stag-15 and attached a single point sling plate. The owner of the range told me that you could just remove the castle nut, twist out the stock, and put the plate on then reattach everything. After I found all the parts and springs that went flying after removing the buffer tube I reassembled everything and thought all was well until I got to the range today. I tried to fire the same round twice, and got light primer strikes each time. I decided to pop the rear pin and have a look inside, then the buffer and that little black detent and spring went flying out into a field. I have found the detent and all the buffer parts, but not the spring. Where can I buy a bunch of extra springs to have on hand? Also, what have I fucked up on the rifle? Thanks for any help you have, and enjoy the laugh at my stupidity.

EDIT: So I think I may have found out what I did wrong. Instead of replacing the stock plate with the sling plate, I just put the new plate on behind the old one and put everything back together again, not allowing the stock to thread in as far as it used to and also not holding the buffer detent in tight enough. Please let me know if I am supposed to replace the old plate with the new one, and I'll try the ballpoint pen spring out until my friend comes home from his AR15 armourers course in a few days. Thanks for your time guys, talk to you soon.

Bushmaster sells spare kits (click on the link at the top of the page).  You can also go to Brownells, Bravo or PK Firearms to buy small parts.  Sounds like you lost the buffer detent spring.

ETA: You can use the spring off a retractable ball point pen in a pinch.  You may have to stretch it out a bit.

I don't think a ball point pen spring would work as a buffer retainer spring. If you go to Midway you can order any individual part you want that's the best way there is no need to order a complete lpk IMO.

ETA: check your firing pin and make sure the retaining pin is holding the firing pin in and not in front of the firing pin. Does that make sense?

Model 1 Sales at least used to sell spare parts kits (and probably still does).

I think RRA has one too.

It's good to have one of those kits around for times just like this.

I like Midway and use them for small parts.  They ship quick, USPS.  I think they have a minimum order charge that shows up at checkout (something like $3 if the order is under $25).

Take a look at this.  It has all the spare springs and is available so you could probably have it by the end of the week.

wrong and wrong.

1. a ballpoint pen spring will work in a pinch, make sure you screw the buffer tube in far enough that it holds the detent in place.
2. the light primer strikes were caused b/c your hammer was interfered with by the buffer and spring not being held in place.
3. put it back together correctly and shoot it

Don't so hard on yourself.  Most everyone in this forum who does their own gunsmithing (me included) has taken something off in the wrong order and sent parts, springs, and other assorted parts flying all over the room.  And anyone who says they've never done that is full of it.

When you get a new spring, tap the hole for a set screw and trim the spring down a little to compensate for the shorter hole.

The set screw retains the spring so you can change stocks more easily.

my bubbasmith area is littered with assorted springs and detents.
I might find them if I ever decide to clean it up
