I know the min. Is 11 3/4 and the max is 13 1/2 but my question is should a new spring be shorter than an older one? I have an older spring that measures around 12 7/8. I bought a new spring and it measures 12 1/2 but it the end of the spring is too big and will not snap onto the buffer tube. It was a dpms spring. I called up the supplier and they hand picked a new spring that was tighter and shipped it out. I recieved the new spring today but now I noticed the length is even shorter at 12 1/4.
Will This be an issue? Are these new springs out of spec? What matters more, the length or coil count? Will the spring that doesn't snap onto the buffer work?

I believe a new spring should be longer. They eventually wear out as they get used. Did you try facing the spring with the fat end the other direction? They both sound out of spec. Maybe they just gave you their old one the second time.

ETA: IDK where you got your min and max above, but both the ones you have are within that range; so, if your data is correct, use the newer one and be done with it.

Both ends of the first new spring are too big and don't snap onto the buffer. The second new spring both ends fit good. I found the min and max specs on numerous places on the net. Counting the coils each spring is differant. My old spring has 44 the other two have 43 and 42. All 3 are within spec length. But it just seems odd both new springs are shorter than my old spring. I guess I have options now.
