I have a DPMS Lite 20 rifle.  I've owned lots of guns in the past, including an AK-47, but this is my first AR-type rifle.  I'm a lefty, and am having a *heck* of a time getting used to the mag release and safety positioning.  The thing is all wrong for me!  I know the mag release can't be changed, and I know they make ambi selectors.

My question is is it possible to remove the existing safety and just flip it?

no to fliping the safety, you will need an ambi selector, and they do sell a ambi mag release

Some safeties can be flipped, others can't, it just depends on how they made it.  Of the 5 or 6 LPK's I've bought only 2 came with safeties that couldn't be flipped.  I can't remember off the top of my head which brand could and which couldn't.  Or, as the above poster mentioned, you can get an ambi safety.  Leave the mag catch alone, that's a training issue, not a hardware issue.  Same with the bolt release.

+1 to getting an ambi safety.  I am a lefty as well and use my thumb to disengage the safety, but my index finger to return the rifle to safe..it just seems like more of a natural and comfortable motion for me.

They make ambi mag releases as stated before, but they are around $90 and aren't really needed.  The mil spec mag release can be utilized easily with some training and practice...as was also stated before.  The way I do it is to depress the button with my thumb while grasping the mag and pulling it out of the mag well.

To release the bolt catch, if you can reach it with your index finger without compromising your grip and are strong enough to depress it with just one finger, then just use your index finger.  If you aren't able to do that, then reach under the barrel and in front of the mag well with your hand and depress it that way.

I can take some pictures if you would like me to, but just find what is the easiest and most efficient for you.

Thanks for the coments all!  Being a lefty with other guns (including a bolt action) has never been an issue for me before.  I shoot left handed because I'm left eye dominant but I'm right handed. (if that makes sense)  Normally, bolt actions and semi-autos work out great because I have the gun in my left hand and am free to work the action with my right hand.

Clearly, the controls on an AR are meant for the right handed shooter.  I think I'll get the ambi safety and let trigger time teach me what works, what's safe, and what's comfortable.

I am a lefty/left eye dominant.  I am getting an AR built with an ambi selector for convenience.  I'm not getting an ambi mag release because I don't think I need it, but I may get one later on down the road.  Just get the ambi selector and you will be good, and make sure the AR has a brass deflector on it, cause if it does't you will not enjoy getting hit in the face with ejecting brass.
