A friend of mine has a gun just like this...same scope and all (SWFA SS 16X) The rifle is in a 5.56 cal and would be great to have a gun that uses the same ammo as my AR-15. He is asking $1000 and I was wondering if anyone would know if it is worth it. I just don't know if a 5.56 would be a large enough cal. for all needs. Should I purchase the gun in a larger cal?

BTW: It has approx. 50 rounds fired through it, and scope and bi-pod along with a hard case comes with it.

Thanks guys!

I would say hold out and get it in .308.

I'm really new to the optics game as well. If you guys have any thoughts on what would be a great sniper/hunting scope, i'm all ears!

+1 Not worth getting unless it is a .308.

The price is high. 223 is not the desirable caliber and can be found for around 600 / 650. Add 300 for new ss and 150 for base and rings and u saved 50 bucks on a used rifle. You can find simeler rigs used for about 850. If it were 308 you would be closer to an appropriate price but still a wee bit high. Heck I have a Remmy LTR in 308 with Leopold Mk4 Rings and base with a Bushnell (Made By Bauch and Lomb) elite 10X milldot with flips Id sell ya for 900.

IMHO - and not to slam anyone's gear but

Used Rem 700P (assumption) in .223 - $500
SS Scope in fixed 16x - considering the single purpose and it is more scope than the round - $150.00
Rings and bases (not exactly sure what they are but I know that they aren't) $25.00
Stock cuff / sling - $40.00
Non swivel harris - $40.00
Hard case - is it of the quality of the give away cases with a bushmaster? - $5.00

I KNOW it cost a lot more to put together.

This is merely my opinion and it is worth what you paid for it.

Good luck to you and your friend.

Taulce,
the name of the game in long-range optics is repeatability. The second most important feature is some sort of parallax adjustment(either on the objective or by means of a third turret) For both of these features, Leupold best fits the bill and will not break the bank like Nightforce, US optics, or Sworovski. Neither the Super Sniper (which is the scope your friend has), nor the Bousch and Lomb are 100% repeatable. The price your friend is asking is IMO about 200-250 too high. Check the equipment exchange here and on www.snipershide.com for these setups, and DEFINITELY get .308 as .223 doesn't have enough energy to really play long range.

I appreciate your comments. Thank you. I was concerned with the caliber as well. Is the .308 the way to go then?

What BDH said is dead on....mostly. I like loupy but feel unless your ponying up for MK4, then you may as well go for the best bang for the buck in glass and save up for real glass. In the mean time, you get to try out LR and see if its really the game for you. If not, then you didnt spend the same on the scope as you did the rifle. The best bang=buck scopes do seem to be the SS and elite 10x. Their key I believe is that they are not variable. The repeatability on mine is great considering its price. It is in a good set of rings though and they are 30mm rings for when you want to step up if you hit that point.

If your going long range go 30 cal.

yes 1 grand is too much.

Get a good Lupe scope put some turrets on it, mount it on a rifle and shoot.

AS for the rifle.

You could buy an action have it barrled and stocked for cheaper and get a good set up.

Look at Tikka for cheap ACCURATE rifles.

+1 on the .308

7mm-08.

Shoots flater than the .308 and is nearly the same size. Kick is a tiny bit less as well.

Has to do with AR-15's if you had read the orginal post...I was wondering if it would be a good adition to the AR since it is the same caliber. I've found out that it apparently isn't and now people are kindly suggesting other items of interest. No lock on this post. Thanks for asking!

.308 or bigger for bolt action 'sniper' type rifles
