Just like the title says -- is it recommended to remove the free-floating handguard from time to time to clean and lube the barrell section that is covered by the handguard?

Yes. Crap gets under there over time. I clean under mine every other range session but I'm crazy about cleaning my guns. I can't sleep if one little spec of crud is on my gun.

I never have. Just reach in ther with a CLP soaked tooth brush or other brush. Very littel crud accumulates there and it is easily cleaned.

my general rule is: take a look, if you dont see anything, don't sweat it. It's not a moving part, so there is no concern for metal on metal wear. The parts are all parkerized, so you'd have to try pretty hard to get it to corrode. Just clean out any obvious crud, other than that, it's not a concern.

I spray BF CLP into the barrel. Spray it with some air to spread it out. It hardly ever gets dirty down there.
