Updated this thread because what I am really tring to figure out is if the greenish tint I see on some (many) of the rounds I have purchased of XM193 is normal?

I'm looking to store this stuff for a long time and am wondering if I have a corrosion (exposure to moisture) problem ???

What say the experts?

Here's some bad stuff (that I won't shoot) from a bulk pack of XM193PD I got:

I recently got 1k rounds of xm193 boxed. The box that the individual boxes came in was destroyed. Some rounds were actually crushed. I would like to know how to determine if the rest of the ammo is any good. Is there any way to tell by looking at it. open up the boxes and look at it.

I would like to be able to tell if the ammo was exposed to moisture. What should I look for and how can I tell. Does anyone have pics that I can use for reference? green crap growing on the side of the case or blacken cases

What does a split case look like? a case that has a crack in it

What kinds of "dings" are okay and what kinds are not? Pics would be helpful? tell you what, here's what you do.  Get a case gage.  It's a thing that you drop the cases into to let you know if their in spec.  If the cases fit, I wouldn't have a problem firing them in my rifle.

Thanks Fellas!

its perfectly normal.  its just a little tarnish on the brass.  it happens.  dont worry.  ive got some nato ammo from the late 70's that looks like theyve been hazed over.  probably stored poorly at one point, but they shoot just fine.

this is pretty new stuff. Tarnish on brass is green I am assuming? Does that affect the primer or powder and would it still be okay to have for SHTF ammo storage?

Thanks

Brass tarnishes over time. It isn't going to hurt what is inside. Wipe them off with a brass cleaner/polish, it shines right up.

Thanks... I was just curious if this was caused by improper storage and if that improper storage would affect it's SHTF capabilities

Were those in the individual 20 round cardboard boxes, or a bulk box? The ones I buy are in the 20 round cardboard boxes and look clean and undented, but not shiny like American Eagle brass.

Yup... from wholesale hunter and they were in the 20 round card board boxes. However, my cases looked like they were dropped from a freight train.

So is it good enought to store for SHTF? I bought this stuff to store.... I plink with WOLF

WRONG!  Some brass cleaners contain amonia which is harsh on brass.  And even if you use a brass friendly polish, you're wasting your time.

There is ABSOLUTELY NO reason to do anything to this ammo.  Buy some ammo cans and Desicant packs and don't worry about it.

It's just tarnish. Unless there are other indicators that the ammo was improperly stored, then it's cosmetic and doesn't matter. It will function just the same as clean, shiny ammo.

It is 100% normal, actually if it didn't look like that then I would be worried.  I have shot the XM193 for a couple of years and every single case I ever bought looks exactly like yours.

Thanks....

I thought the greenish tint on the case indicated that it was stored improperly and exposed to moisture ....
Oh well, when the zombies come I guess I'll find out LOL
