So do you use the small aperture all the time, no matter the distance? Or just when zeroing at 50yds. That is my question. Sorry, I'm new to the ar.

In this procedure, the small aperture is used to zero the rifle. After you're done, use the large aperture for close-up targets and use the small aperture for longer distances.

For me, anyway, I use the small aperture all the time. It is more precise than the larger one and my eyes have held up relatively well to use it! (five years from now I might have a different answer!) |

You sight in with IBZ after the rear site has been adjusted for 8/3 -2 clicks. Sight in with small aperture, 50 yards, rear sight 8/3 -2. After achieving zero with these settings the same POI can be achieved with rear sight set to 8/3 and large aperture.

You shouldnt sight in with the small arperture first because it will be off when you switch to the large one wich is the sight used for 0-200 yds.So at 50 yds sight in the larger arperture then go to the small one it should be dead on.use a center hold when aiming,I also at 50 practice with both eyes open something you have to use the large sight for.Try your self sight in at 50 on the small arperture and then go to large using the same sight picture the rifle hits high off center.

If you're familiar with the method of the IBZ, you would know that that is what is done AFTER adjusting the rear sight to go to 8/3 -2 clicks. You sight in with the SMALL aperture, with the rear sight set to 8/3 -2 clicks, at 50 yards. Here's how I set mt A2 for the Santose IBZ.............
1) Rear sight elevation wheel set to bottom out at 8/3 -2 clicks. 2) Use small aperature. Adjust front sight for POA=POI at 50yds. 3) Flip up to large aperature, leave wheel at 8/3 -2 clicks for everything under 300yds. 4) Flip to small aperature and advance wheel to 8/3 for targets over 300yds. ........... it works for me! |

It's not ambiguous ... but it helps to read the whole thing.
The whole point is to have a zero you can use over the useful range of your weapon without fiddling with elevation adjustments. You use the large aperture at your discretion with the rear elevation set at 8/3. You use the small aperture at your discretion with the rear elevation set to 8/3 -2 clicks. Which you use and when depends on personal preference, eyesight, and what balance you wish to have between speed of sight acquisition vs. precision of sight picture. |

Accordint to USMC doctrine:
BZO with the small aperature, 8/3 -2. AFTER you BZO, set to 8/3 large aperature. If you are in COMBAT engaging targets at various ranges from contact to 300yards, keep the large aperature. If you are on a KD course, flip the small peep up. It is stupid simple. The large aperature gives you much faster sight alignment. When I patrolled, I ALWAYS had the large peep up. In anything but open desert there really isn't any need to switch to the small aperature. If you are "target" shooting, use the small aperature. |

What would be wrong with using the small sight with all ranges? It seems it keeps sight picture more compressed onto target?hinking.gif

large is faster. the faster you are the higher the chance you come home with you shield instead of upon it.
