I originally thought these would work with the C Products mags, I have since been enlightened Read my latest post in the thread for how great this block works! |
|
No bolt hold open on Uzi mags. The uzi mags with the two vertical grooves above the mag retaining slot but below the feed lips work 100% in mine. I believe they are mil-surplus uzi mags. As far as modifying your Hytech, I can't see what it would hurt to file a channel for the rib. Have you checked the VM Hytech thread stickied above to see if anyone has done that? http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=15&t=166968 |
Maybe somebody would like to trade a Colt style magwell adapter for the Hytech. Maybe better -- swap some good 32 round unmodified Uzi mags for the C-mags. The C-mags have that bolt-hold-open feature and were meant to work with a Colt type magblock. There may be somebody, that has a ton of Uzi mags and a Colt magblock, that would like to swap with you. By the way, the Hytech has an Uzi type magazine catch so if you decide to keep the thing I kinda believe you would also have to cut that Uzi mag notch in the C-mags. Please correct me if I'm wrong -- I don't have a Hy-tech magwell adapter. |

I thought the VM Hytech block was designed for use with unmodified Uzi mags. Is CP making Uzi mags now or are you trying to use the CP 9mm Colt style mags? I guess you could modify the block and add an Uzi mag catch to the CP Colt style 9mm mags so they would work, but that seems counterintuitive to me. I think you either need to get Uzi mags if you want to use the VM Hytech block, or get a Colt style block like a Hahn, RRA, or Garrison so you can use the CP 9mm Colt style mags. |
| Obviously I have gotten mixed up. I had thought the Colt style = Uzi. I see now that I was wrong. The thing I really liked about the hytech block as that it just slipped in. I think I'd even rather have this than the bho, so i guess I'll be selling or swapping the cprod mags for uzis. At least the uzi mags are dirt cheap.. |

You want to use COLT & clone mags, use a COLT pattern mag block The Hy-Tech block was made to use plain old everyday Uzi mags, as if the block was a UZI magwell. COLT & clone mags don't fit in an Uzi. You need to decide which frills you want, cheap mags/no bolt hold, bolt hold and all std AR operation.. |
I think I just said I got it, thanks though.

I was thinking (I smell smoke) that maybe you might want to look at the pinned thread about the Hy-tech magwell adapter at the beginning of this section -- I think it's the 5th one down. I seem to remember seeing threads here about some types of Uzi mags fitting better than others. I believe the pinned thread also explains how to make some of the odd Uzi mags fit the Hy-tech just fine. |
Thanks - I noticed that in there too. Sounds like some need filing, I can deal with that. Looks like I'll be selling the cprod mags when I get back from vacation.
|
uh... Even if you filed the mag block you still dont have the UZI mag catch slot in the CP mags. |
Thanks, please re-read, we were talking about Uzi mags, not CP. Looks some filing is needed with them, but that's no biggie.

FYI, for anybody considering the block, it worked out great. So did all the other parts. I think we were able to put together this setup for about 900 bucks total. The great this about this is he can pull the upper and drop the mag block..and be changed over to 5.56 shooing in about a minute without having to go with a dedicated lower or bolt in magwell. Finished my buddy's carbine with the following: RRA 16" 9mm upper RRA 9mm buffer, regular carbine spring Double Star Lower DPMS parts kit (with the "special" hammer) 6 pos m4 type stock VM Hytech mag block Pack of new Uzi 32rnd mags Tasco (gasp) red dot sight We went out to the range today (and the folks there were duly impressed with this weapon). Granted, we were limited to a 25 yard pistol range that we can get to on our lunch hour...but in 12 shots I had that inexpensive red dot shooting almost perfect thru the same hole. This thing was flawless, we fired about 120 rounds without any issues, and it was plenty accurate. I have no doubt it will perform well at further distances. |
