I have plenty of AR's, Colt, Bushy and RRA.  All run fine.

But I'd like to build one totally from the ground up, as much for entertainment
as shooting.

As part of my experiment I want to build the cheapest one possible and just play
with it as far as reliability etc.

So, help me out.

Who has the cheapest parts, I mean bottom drawer stuff here.
What config is cheapest, barrel etc.  No flash hider, whatever, just bottom end.
Cheapest Lower, upper, whatever.

Only rule I have is I will only buy "new" stuff.

Might take me a few weeks to gather all the pieces but I'll post pics and range
reports and run at least 1000 rounds through it just to see how it does.

Thanks!

Do you have the tools to put the barrels on? If not a kit is going to pobably be your cheapest way with all new parts. I think I paid $420 shipped to my door from Del-ton. If you are willing to bend your rules and just use a new barrel you could probably get it cheaper but buying the tools and shipping cost is what would hurt you. Good luck.

Yeah, I have all the tools, action blocks, either owned or available for me to borrow.
That isn't going to be a problem.

If I have to gather stuff up at gunshows or whatever, it may take a while, but I'm
building it for my own curiosity mainly.

I am not going to spend big money on it, but I feel like I can build a complete
rifle for well under $400.

Model 1 has a complete kit less the lower for $435.  I think I can piece things
together for less than that, but I'll see.

As I gather info I'll see how it is going.

Who has the cheapest lowers?

Watch the EE all the time under used ar parts my last 20" I put to gether went something like this

Stag Lower-$90(after transfer I bought 2 when they were cheap)
LPK of the EE-$40
Colt A2 Stock off the EE-$30
Compete upper with b/bc/ch no barrel from the EE$165
Colt gov. profile barrel from the EE $40
Misc Barrel parts and armorer tools from the EE $45

Lets see thats $410 completed that in my opinion is cheap. Now I have put together other ones like my latest 16" for $375

Building a complete AR with brand new quality parts cannot be done cheaply.  All prices are from the EE from various dealers

$85 for a lower w/o shipping or x-fer fee (Superior Arms are the cheap ones right now or Stag)
$45 lower parts kit (Del Ton)
$55 6 position stock from TheTic
$95 CMT flattop upper (number of dealers have them for this)
$105 bolt/bolt carrier and charging handle package (Eagle Firearms)
$180 non chrome lined ER Shaw barrel from any dealer, does not inlcude shipping (Model 1 sales)

Total cost is $565.

Thats about the cheapest you can build a brand new AR for, from NEW parts.  And that price does not include tools or some shipping.

Wow.  Some of you guys have done this amazingly cheap.

The best I am coming up with is around $545.

I may go to some used parts.  My primary interest is educational
for the most part.

Its because they are using used parts from the EE, or at least buying parts from the EE from private sellers advertised as "new" or like new.

It just cant be done with all brand new parts for under $500.  Unless you find a gun shop or gun show dealer who is just trying to unload parts.  But if you are talking using standard vendors it cant be done.

$160 to build the below weapon, and all parts were new.

No, I couldn't do it again.

All new parts, but not really as cheap as any of the others listed here.
$80-Superior Arms lower at a gunshow.
$50-RRA LPK at the gunshow.
$70-RRA 6 pos. stock at the gunshow
$308-M16A2 upper shipped off Gunbroker
$100- Bolt/carrier From RB Precision at a Blastfest.
$608

I'm happy with it, but it could have been done cheaper if I had bought a cheap barrel and a new take-off A2 upper.

i did mine with all new parts.. i priced it out at about $650 useing all respected parts from trusted dealers found through the equipment exchange, it ended up getting up to the $850 range after i decided i wanted a 2 stage trigger, M4 ramps, and a few other minor upgrades and a few tools and services from my local dealer like head space check. btw never buy anything from tapco.. man what crap.
