So a few months ago I built my first lower using my coffee table and some cheap punches...

What I'm looking to do now, and what I need your help on... is creating some sort of make-shit shop so I can start assembling uppers.  I live in a duplex and space is VERY limited.  No car-port, and no unused room in the place.

I figure all I need is some way to mount a vice, nice and sturdy, so I can torque down the barrel.  So I need some advice in how to approach this.  Do I buy some wood and make a sawhorse type base to mount a vice???  The ability to collapse or naturally take up as little space as possible is a must.  My initial thought was creating some type of wooden clamp that would essentially mount the vice to the kitchen counter.  But I don't want to to risk ruining anything (RENTAL)...

Let the brainstorming begin... and thank you in advance!

I'd get something like this...

B&D Workmate

Then I'd mount a vice onto a sturdy piece of lumber & clamp that to the workbench when needed.

It folds away for storage - so it should help in the apartment world.

Good luck,
Bob S.

That does look like a possible solution... should i have any concerns with it being sturdy enough to torque a barrel?

If space is your main concern, mount your vise to a piece of scrap 3/4" plywood.  Counter sink the holes in the bottom so the head of the bolt sits flush or below the surface of your wood.  Glue a piece of tool cabinet drawer liner to the bottom.  When in use, clamp it to your coffee table or kitchen countertop; whatever.  The drawer liner on the bottom will prevent you scratching the surface you are clamping to.

Drawer liner could be replaced with self stick cork sheets or thick kitchen cabinet shelf liner.

Take a look in the reloading forum for bench ideas.  Specifically this thread.  There are those that have similar requirements as you for reloading in a small space and their bench ideas will also address your requirements to do builds in a small space.
