I know you guys can help me out with this.
Here is what I know:
According to the serial number it was made in 1973.
Appears to have been re-barreled, as you can see some DA put in a vise and it has the wrong Delta Ring for that period.  I am guessing it probably had a 20 inch barrel from the factory. Also not sure it would have come with a standard butt stock and a carbine length barrel.

Also take a look at the front sight post…it has an allen head screw in it almost like an adjustable Gas Block, not sure I have seen that before.

Any comments, thoughts, or ideas are welcome

Sorry I don't know why the photos want upload....such a process

Thanks
Mark

looks like a SP1 that was modded.  the serial is too low to be a factory carbine.

the pistol grip was changed to a lone star ordnance stowaway grip.  the type e trapdoor a1 stock is also too late for this serial.

does the barrel have any markings?   barrel was changed along with the delta ring.  a flash hider that replicates the moderator and grenade ring (attached backwards) was permanently attached.  not sure why, it looks 16" without the muzzle device.  the allen screw is a mod we've seen a few times.  speculation was that it was done on carbines to make the gas tube removal/installation easier.

not much looks original other than the lower and upper.

Thanks for posting the link. I guess I am not as smart as I thought about uploading the photos.

No Markings on the barrel. The barrel is 11 inches without the flash supressor

I’m not as familiar with the older AR’s as I want to be but I had the same thoughts about parts being changed.
The rifle was brought to me by a guy that said it belonged to his Father who has passed away and wanted to traded it in on an updated AR,
also what is a good reference source for the older stuff

Thanks

Mark

yeah it's pretty much a parts gun at this point.  it might be a good shooter.  if you do decide to part it out, that lower is worth extra due to it's preban status to someone in NY.

if I did a part out I would probably try to go back Original or make a more accurate clone.

may be a nice lower for a M231 Project

This sounds about right - honestly, though, if it's a decent shooter as is, that pinned moderator's not horrible, even with the backwards grenade ring.  Better than most of that vintage.

I'd frankly just put a new CAR stock on the thing with an NDS two position extension, swap the grip for an A1, and call it a GAU-5/A/A clone on a 601 lower.

I wonder - regarding the set screw mod on the FSB - could you pull the gas tube and post some pictures/examine it, as well as removing the set screw?  I don't think I've yet heard a good explanation for why it was done that way.

Maybe it's a plug for a cut down rifle length gas tube?

Pulling the gas tube and the parts for the FSB is all feasible along with taking photos but that is a job for a different day.
I am kind of curious about the allen screw myself.

Now after reading those 2 articles I am really curious.
