What exactly is the KAC adaptor for mounting a bipod on the Ras?  Is it a Rail Grabber unit?

Seems to me that the perfect solution is to just get a mounting stud that matches the threaded holes already in the RAS

Would think interchangeability is the key. The stud mounting you suggest would be like a semi-permanent arrangement (not as easily removed thus limiting the flexibility of the RAS) by taking up dedicated space on the six o'clock position.

The adapter is about 2 inches in length itself and attaches to the rail using a crossbolt similar to the arrangement of how you attach an ARMS #36/ #38 to the picatinny rail of an A3/A4 (attach using a flat head screwdriver). The KAC mount also has a dual purpose of acting as a mounting point for a sling/swivel. Got mine for $35.

The beauty of owning an AR is that you get to fit them out however you want tho... .

If you mean

then it is a regular rail clamp and is compatible with all accessory rails.
