Hey guys hows it goin? Im new to the forum and I had a question about handguards. I just got done building a spikes lower/ stag 20" upper. Im really happy with it, but after only two trips to the range I found that the stock a2 handguards are starting to swell making them a pain in the ass to shoot with because there is a gap forming between the two halfs making them "squishy".

I was wondering if there is a higher quality pair I could purchase that wont be affected by the heat as much? Im a fan of the stock looking handguards. Is there a free float setup that retains the look of the a2 guards? Any help is greatly appreciated!

what do you mean by "swell"...as in the heat is building up and warping the plastic?

this thread might help:

also, the only FF handguards that i know of that keep the A2 profile of the HGs are the DCM/match ones like these:

Yeah, i think the heat from the barrel made the plastic soft enough to where the pressure from the delta ring pushing on it made them bow outwards in the center. Holding the rifle business end facing up, ejection port facing you it kinda looks like this (). Thanks for the links, ill definately check them out

do you have heat shields in the handguards?

i've seen some ARs go through several hundred rnds constantly and not fraze the std plastic handguards w/ heat...

There is nothing wrong with the standard handguards, so long as you get a good quality set.  Before you go to any radical changes, I would just try a set of handguards from somebody else, military surplus if you can get them.

Yeah im running the heatshields in them. They did get pretty hot though. They were to the point where i couldnt grab them for more than a few seconds. I heard stag made good stuff, wonder why there handguards suck? That DPMS unit looks pretty nice. Pretty much exactly what i was looking for.

They must be made of crappy plastic, or something.....I mean, if there's actually heatshields in them......I've never seen this happen to an AR, M16 or otherwise.

Not real helpful, am I?

Different set is clearly in order, though.  You might just try a different set of standard A2 type, before you go spendin' money on a FF.....unless that's the route you eventually wanna go anyway.

Yea i was planning on gettin a free float anyways. Ill just live with it for now until i buy a scope. Not really lookin to be super anal about my shooting. Just something to do with the girlfriend and the buddies. Not tryin to switch subjects, but whats a good place to start in terms of glass? Im not lookin to double the value of my rifle, just want something that will get the job done but not be a total piece of shit. I will do most of my shooting at 100 yards or so. Cant really find a range in my area that has anything beyond that. Thanks for the help again guys i really do appreciate it!
