I am looking at the different optics available and man it is quite confusing, Right now it looks like I will be going with a Red Dot from Aimpoint, unless someone can give me a reason not to.
I chose Aimpoint because of: 1) Red Dot 2) Battery Life Mostly the great things people have been saying about them. With iron sights, I am putting together very respectable groups at 50yds and 100yds. However, beyond 100yds is where I think the Red Dot will help a lot. Here lies my question: Do I choose an optice with 2 MOA or 4 MOA. The other option of course is to ge an optic with the option of 2 Dot Sizes. This pushes me away from the Aimpoint PRO, to the Comp M3 or similar. Can anyone provide input on dot size? Do I really need a choice of 2 dot sizes? then of course which mount do I choose? Any input would be great. |

I bought my first aimpoint around 04 and still use it, although I have two others also. It was the best purchase I ever made for AR type stuff. Great reliable optic. I use mostly LaRue mounts although I have used ARMS and ADM. I think LaRue is the one to get. Personally I don't think the dot size matters much, maybe others will disagree I'm not sure an aimpoint will help you shoot better at 100 yards |

I believe Aimpoints come in either 2 moa or 4 moa not both in one optic. As for shooting at over 100 yards it can be done better then irons but it's not a magnified optic. The red dot is a great thing, and a regular scope is also great so I use both and switch out when the need arises.I have a ML3 (2moa) and couldn't be happier but if I had to do it again I would get the H1 or T1 because it's smaller and lighter, but I think they only come in 4moa but I might be wrong.
I had a Leupold shot gun scope laying around so I bought a PEPR mount for it and it works fine at the range ,it's a 1x4.That's the scope I switch the Aimpoint out for once in a while. |

People will argue but for non maginified optics Aimpoint is the way to go. The new Trijicon SRS might be a good choice when it's released too.
I've shot a T-1 for a few years now and believe I shoot better with the optic at 100+ yards then I do with irons. Of the team of guys I shoot with half agree with me and half think they are more precise with irons if they have all the time in the world to take a shot. Red dots are definitely faster than irons for 30 yards and in. If you are concerned about group size then a 2 moa dot would be prefered over a 4 moa dot. It's just math, a 2 moa dot covers 2 inches of your target at 100 yards while a 4 moa dot covers 4 inches of your taget at 100 yards. |

Dot size does not effect group size..this has been proven(Molon).. An Aimpoint is one of the best general purpose optics you can own and will rarely be out shot by its owner. |

Dot size will affect accuracy if it affects your view of the target and ultimately your point of aim. Then explain how High power shooters using a 7-9 MOA front sight can hit accurately out to 600 yds??There is more affecting accuracy then your sight, like breathing, and trigger press... that is what kills most shooters accuracy.. not the sight. Like I said, that myth has been proven false, by many good shooters. |

What you are missing is that for accuracy to remain the same between two optics with varying reticle size, all other factors must be equal (or close). I thought my statement was clear that the difference in reticle size can affect shooter perception differences which can lead to shooter error and thus larger groups. I'm a fairly good shot, not the best by far, and I shoot thousands of rounds through an AR a year. I'm speaking from experience when I say it can affect your groups. I'm not saying it will most definitely affect them. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

I see no downside to a 2MOA dot. I have never had a problem picking it up. Mount options will depend on which Aimpoint you go with but the most popular will be LaRue, American Defense and Bobro. The PRO comes with a decent mount from Aimpoint. I am out of PROs to check one personally but Aimpoint lists them at 2MOA in their web site.
