OK, I give up.  What, if any,  advantage does the mid-length gas system offer over and above the CAR system.  I'm just trying to figure out why two such similar systems both exist.

Thanks,

The mid-length system exists because someone couldn't be a player in the rifle or carbine market so they invented their own, market that is...

Mid length gas ports deliver a lower pressure. This results in a softer operation than the carbine gas system.

You also barrel past the gas port for reliable operation. The carbine gas was designed with 14.7" barrels in mind. Since most people don't (or can't) go SBR, mid length works very nicely with 16".

Yep, farther down the bore the gas port is, them more time the gun powder has to burn to lower/more stable pressurize the gas from different type of rounds.

Plus as stated, since civilians can't go less than 16" barrels without a NFA stamp, nice to have the longer hand guard to hold onto so you don't burn the "ever loving piss" out of your hand when it creeps forward into a toasty barrel/front band (read I do that all the time with full auto AK's and gotten to a point that I will not even light one up without my forward hand gloved).
