I have a S&W M&P 15 that needs some help. I've already sent it back once for shortstroking. Based on replies here, and some part swapping, I think the gas key on the factory carrier is shit. I've read up on replacing it, and it doesn't seem bad at all.

I was going to order a BCM gas key direct from Bravo, but they are out of stock. Any recommendations on another brand to use?

Update-

Got a call from someone higher up the ladder in CS at S&W. They are going to swap out the whole BCG for me and see if that fixes the problem. Glad to see they are trying to make this right.

Mind if I ask how you came to the conclusion that your gas key is bad? It's been my experince that they sometimes need to be tourqed on a little tighter and the bolts that hold them on replaced and restaked, but I havent seen a bad one yet.

S&W modified the gas port and block on the rifle, which helped, but didn't completely solve the problem. They felt the carrier and key were fine. However, with all OEM parts, the carbine won't cycle with silver bear, wolf, etc... When I switch over to an LMT carrier, presto, I can run steel cased .223. Looking down the S&W key hole, it appears as though the opening going down to the bolt is smaller than on my LMT.
The staking is good on both carriers and the bolts are tight. So, I've concluded that there is a flaw in the key.

So it works when you swap out the carrier, well, if you want to buy a gas key you can, but I think it will give the factory a reason to void your warranty. Have you considered sending it back to the with this info and see what they do? It's up to you, but I hate to see you spend $ on a premium rifle and then have to replace parts on your own wallet.

Or get an LMT carrier for it.

Yeah, I've considered sending it back. I'd rather not be without the rifle for another month, but it might come down to that. The first time I sent it in I included a very detailed letter saying that swapping carriers helped solve the shortstroking problem. The gas port was apparently the main cause of the problem, but it appears as though it still isn't getting enough gas to the bolt. I just have this sneaking suspicion that since the factory carrier will run with hot ammo that I'll get the exact same gun back when I send it in.

Yeah, I know what you mean. The guy who said replace the whole carrier probably has a point cause if we replace the gas key, the gas port size will just get reduced further down the system at the carrier...  It's like you just cant win sometimes.
