I have begun to build a .300 Blackout Upper on the cheap, and I have begun to buy parts as sales come along. I found a PSA blemished upper and their upper build kit was on sale after Thanksgiving. While on the site, I saw a magpul moe carbine length hand guard. I picked this handguard up because I wanted affordability to be a major factor in the build and I don't plan on lots of accessories that would require a whole rail system. I have not yet ordered my barrel, but found Zombie Barrels has a 10.5" .300 barrel for $150.00. I intended for the gas block to hold the hand guard in place, as my 10.5" 5.56 upper has a carbine length gas system, but I now see that 10.5" .300 uppers use a pistol length gas system. Because of this, the functioning gas block won't be able to hold the magpul hand guard on.
I still want to build this on the cheap, so I thought I would go "dissipator style" by using a low profile gas block at the pistol gas location and putting a hand guard cap & second gas block at the carbine gas location. Unfortunately, I found that this barrel has a step-down in diameter, getting slightly smaller past the real gas block's location. Other 10.5" .300 barrels I have seen have a similar step-down. Is it still possible to mount a second gas block on the smaller portion of the barrel? If so, how do I know what size gas block to get? The diameter of the barrel at the gas port is .750, but I don't know what block to buy for the second spot. I'd really like to build this without forking out the $$ for a free-float rail, as my 5.56 upper is where my money goes. This is more of a play/range/pig gun, and I know a .300 out of a 10.5" barrel is a limited-range tool, so I'm not looking to spend thousands. If anyone has any experience or advise for this, I'd appreciate it. Thanks! |

how big is the stepdown.......a split clamp rail type with a shim inside would probably work.....but one of the less expensive two piece quad rails would work fine if you have acess to a lathe to make an endcap......like this .
