To lazy to type it out but if you go here and scroll down to Operating mechanism they explain it pretty well. Where it says front sight block you insert gas block.

Gas blocks facilitate redirecting the gas into the gas tube - something needs to connect the barrel and tube. It "blocks" gas from spewing out. A front sight base is technically a gas block, but also with a front sight post and sometimes a bayonet lug. Simpler, lower profile ones are often used under free float rails that extend over the gas block (gives more rail space). Other gas blocks have a built in flip-up front sight or its own set of rails. It all boils down to user preference and whatever is compatible with your setup.
