I would like to replace my fixed front sight unit with a flat top type sight base/ gas stop unit for a fold down sight. Is this a do it yourself type job or is it something that I need a gunsmith for. Any info or directions to information on completing this would be great.

thanks

If you feel comfortable knocking out two tapered pins with a hammer and punch, you can do it.
There's no fitting or anything like that, but you may need the barrel dimpled if it uses set screws.
One of mine does, but it's held fine for 4 years without dimpling the barrel.

It isn't really the easiest thing to do on an ar, sometimes the pins are a bitch to knock out, but it is one of the simplest operations.

I have been wanting to do the same thing,
but I have been worried that the holes (for the pin) in the original sight and barrel,
would not perfectly line up with the new sight holes.

Is that ever a problem ?

And do you need to redrill the barrel ?
