I was going to do a midlength free float on my colt AR. I seem to not be able to remove the front sight post taper pins.
I seen that they come out from the right side, but they wont move. Any ideas? I don't have the front sight post pin removal tool. |

There is no special tool, just a heavy punch, a good hammer and most important, a firm base to pound on.
Get a block of hardwood, under an inch thick. Set it on a solid concrete floor, then put the barrel on the block and hit it HARD. You don't want to use a skinny punch. In fact, a piece of 1/2" square bar stock SIDEWAYS, works great. The pins are HARD steel. Use something a bit softer, like low carbon steel bar. The shorter the punch, the "stiffer" it is |

+1 to the above.
The first time I removed a FSB, I was scared to hit it as hard as necessary. Adequately support the FSB, and then just do it. Use a BIG hammer and hit it HARD. I usually soak mine in some penetrating oil prior to removing them now. I'm not sure if it helps or not, but I figure it can't hurt. |

Use a nail set instead of a pin punch to knock the pin loose. Then follow up with a standard pin punch to knock the pin the rest of the way through.
The nail sets concave face helps to keep centered on the pin while striking it, and helps prevent the deformation of the pin which can often take place while trying to remove a stubborn pin. The pins are steel, but they are not strong enough to resist mushrooming or deforming if removed incorrectly. |
