What round fragments at a closer distance a .223 Remington or 5.56x45mm all other things being equal?

Or is fragmentation equal until you reach distance where the differences show? I know that 5.56x45mm gives you better fragmentation at distance.

I woulod think that they both would, figuring that you are using a bullet that will fragment.  Both should be going fast enough to frag at close distances unless shot out of a short barrel.  5.56 would give an edge due to the increased velocity and is why it frags at range better then 223.  Hope that this answered your question.

The 5.56 will always win.  Alot of .223 loads hover very close to the reliable frag velocity threshold (barrel length depending)....I have tested some .223 loads out of my 14.5" barrel that shoot under 2700 fps.  also it depends on the load being used, alot of .223 bullets use too thick of a jacket to frag, such as wolf and even UMC I think.

Impossible to tell. Assuming it's the same bullet used in each, the one with the higher muzzle velocity will frag out further.

You can usually make the assumption that something labeled 5.56x45 is going to be faster than something labeled .223, but you could also have some really hot loaded .223.
