hey everyone, this will be my first post on ar15.com. I'm a 23yo carpenter from the boston area and I've been shooting trap for a few years now with my remington 870 pump in 12 ga. as well as some long range shooting and hunting with my remington 700 bolt 30-06. I've been dabbling in hangun shooting lately and just bought my first handgun which is a S&W Sigma 40. anyways, I'm interested in getting into the AR and AK platforms and found my way to this board. I want to build my first AR so that I can build one the way that I like and maybe save a few dollars on parts and labor. I've been poking around a little bit and havent found a new members forum or a guide to the first build sticky so I thought I'd just go ahead and ask. What do you guys reccomend for parts for a first build? Where have you found to be the best place to purchase these parts? Id like to keep the price down for my first build and keep everything pretty basic. Things that I would definitely like to have is for it to stay chambered in .223, the 6 position stock, the ability to easily add a sling, a rail system that allows me to have a removable carry handle now and still allow for an eo tech or acog sight down the road. These are really the only things set in stone, could you guys give me some advice or point me in the right direction, if this doesnt sound practical to you thats something id like to hear too? would I be better off just buying my first AR? Id appreciate all the help and advice I can get. Thank you |

Welcome aboard! Prepare for a major case of BRD (black rifle disease). It's an affliction that sets in once you get your first AR. Suddenly you'll have two, three maybe more, and parts enough to build even more. You'll find lots of places to get parts. Start with any of the two dozen or so vendors you see advertising above. Most offer quality parts and service at a fair price. There are always deals to be found and if you're like most you'll build your AR with parts from many vendors and sources. The rifle you describe is pretty basic and should be an easy enough first build for you. Again shop around and price stripped lowers, lower parts kits, and either complete uppers or the various pieces to complete an upper. You should be able to build something like that for $650 or less, including the removable carry handle, and that's without any fantastic deals on EE (equipment exchange). I'd start with Model1 Sales for the parts you need at low prices. Like everything in life though, you get what you pay for. Stay away from clearly cheap or knock off parts and you'll be fine. BTW, good choice with the Sigma. I have two, a first gen SW40F with over 15k rounds through it, and I just bought a 40VE to keep in my BOB. You'll find people either love them or hate them, so when you find a hater don't let his attitude influence you. Yeah the trigger could be better, but hey if you can shoot the Sigma well, you'll shoot everything else even better. I was a one gun guy (the Sigma) for 8-9 years and I could routinely pick up someone elses pistol and outshoot them. I attribute it to learning on the Sigma trigger. YMMV. |
I've already heard a lot of love and hate stories for the sigma. Like you said a lot of people seem to dislike the trigger pull. I had the same thoughts though when I first got mine to the range, but I've always been a firm believer in the theory that learning on a difficult platform will help you perform that much better on an easier platform. thank you for your advice on the AR build, its a relief to hear that the price wont break the bank. cant wait to get addicted |
| Del-Ton (see add @ top of page) has kits like you want for $465+$95(receiver)+$45($20 shipping and $25 FFL transfer)+$45($35carry handle from CAA $10 shipping)+$25(couple mags and a GI sling)=@the range shooting for $675. There are ways to cut corners (i.e. cheaper kit, cheaper transfer fee). The cool thing about a build is you can build as funds permit. |
