Hello everyone. I am new to the site and am excited to be here. I have decided to build my first AR15 and am in need of some help. I am not knew to guns but I am to ARs. I have been reading as much as I can to learn and grow. I know that I know nothing (very little) lol. I dont know much of the acronyms either sorry. So far this is what I have planned.
I want to build an all mil spec all black AR15 with a 16" barrel chambered in 5.56 with a 1:8 twist. I would like to go with a collapsible stock. I may shoot .223 ammo through it (Buffer weight). Below is the free float rail that I would like to use. I have a friend that has built 7 ARs that have adviced me that I should focus my money on anything to with the gas system (the barrel, BCG, etc.). Everything else is pretty much similar and can spend slightly less money on that. https://www.highvelocityarms.com/collections/fortis-manufacturing/products/fortis-night-rail-system-556 If there is any information that you could provide whether its parts to choose (not to choose), specs, general knowledge, etc I would greatly appreciate it. |

First off, there is no such thing as an all mil-spec AR unless you are issued one in the military. It is not possible to build an all mil-spec civilian AR. Additionally, a 16" barrel with a 1/8 twist will not be mil-spec. A barrel of that nature will most likely have a mid-length gas system and either a .223 Wylde chamber or maybe a 5.56 chamber. What type of ammo will you be using? 55 gr.? 62 gr.? 72 gr.? 75 gr.? 77 gr.? All of this has a bearing on which barrel twist is best. A 1/8 twist barrel with a .223 Wylde chamber is a good compromise and can do very well with a broad range of ammo both .223 REM and 5.56 NATO. Personally, I have built just over 60 ARs of wide varieties. The looming questions are what is the purpose for this AR and what is your budget? Additionally, you want to spend your money in a good quality barrel that suits the purpose. You want a BCG that is good quality as well, but it does not have to be expensive. The buffer tube needs to have consideration as well. Is this AR going to be a range weapon/home defense or is it going to get knocked around and abused? If it is a range weapon/HD, you can get away with using a buffer tube made from 6061 aluminum. If this AR is going to be abused and knocked around, you want one made from 7075-T6 aluminum. In any event, it is best to get one made with mil-spec dimensions. If you want to talk in person, IM me and I will give you my number. |

Don't know where you are with this, started, middle of or finished......however from looking at your budget you should have plenty to build a really nice AR.
People on this site are great to help out! (Think they just like spending other peoples money......who doesn't right?) No, really great people on this site! Others certainly have more experience/knowledge but can share what I've found, learned and know first hand from my build. From what I've seen you can build a solid quality above average AR for about $550, then have plenty of $ for really good optics. I found the following to help me, would suggest.......and will say that what I used on my build or like might not be right for you and your build. Think about and know the intended use, (What's your target, bullet weight you intend to use or potentially use, and range you intend to use it for. (Factors that will determine, barrel length, barrel lining, barrel material, gas system) Get hands on with different configurations, especially the items you might want to see if they are right for you and your build. What do you care about, is it end function reliability, name of manufacturer, tested/not tested, weight, material used, color, durability, ambidextrous parts, etc. Watch for sales and be ready to pull the said trigger on an item you have decided is for you (know that there will always be a better deal out there that you missed or someone else found) Ask questions of others as you've done, this will help you get to your end result without anguish Remember in the end it's your build and you are the one who will be using it, and living with it. If you are happy that is what counts! If you like it, are comfortable with it, want to shoot it, and it fits you in my view that's the key start to an accurate rifle. Regarding my build......... Am I happy with my build? YES! Am I proud of it ABSOLUTELY! Would I change anything at this point? Nope! |
