Hello everyone, this is my first post here. I'm hoping I'm in the correct section. If not, I apologize in advance.

I'm at a point in my life where I can seriously consider the purchase of a firearm, specifically the AR15; which I've gawked over, for several years now. I'm beginning to save my dollars, but as I save, I'm running into a bit of a quandry.

Ultimately what I'd like to own is the newest Colt AR15A4, never been owned before me. Altough in the same breath I'm not opposed to purchasing a used rifle, either. I also don't want to go through the hassle of ordering a firearm online; as I honestly have no clue what goes into such a process. I've never purchased a weapon before, truthfully, unless you count a pack of boxcutters or a hammer. However, if that's what must be done, challenge accepted.

That being said, I'm curious as to which would ultimately be better. Is the Colt name worth the money you spend in this day and age? Or would it be wiser to buy either a new or used rifle of a different brand?

If the latter, is there anything specific to look out for? And, what's a good price? I'm more than willing to pay for the Colt, but I take a disliking to spending unnecessarily when I can get something equal for less.

Also, it's worth noting that I'm not looking for the shorter, carbine version that seems to be taking the market by storm. I only desire the full length AR15; fixed stock, full length handguard, etc; identical to the below.

Thank you for your time. I eagerly await your responses.

You have made a great choice. A4 is where it's at. Learning the fundamentals and what not on the full sized rifle is a good thing.

I'll say it again; 20 inch rifles are best rifles.

The Colt would be a great choice.  BCM and FN also make  similar and great 20" rifles.  Check them out too.

The particulars of purchase will depend on what state you're in.

Colt A4 is an excellent choice. My first was a RRA, that I purchased from Pete 11 years ago . I was a hesitant of purchasing over the Internet also. But my first transaction and every transaction since has went very smoothly. Spend some time searching, and reading post at this website. There are tons of info here, don't rush into purchasing something... TAKE YOUR TIME!!!!

My uncle just bought a new Colt AR-15 A4 for $995.00. He ordered over 8 months ago through a local dealership. GunBroker is asking ridiculous prices right now because they are limited distribution items.

If you are hell bent on getting an issue style A4 and don't mind paying a premium for it consider FN-USA's Collector Series model. They go for the same price as the Colt's on GunBroker and come with a KAC railed handguard.

There is almost 175 pages of A4 discussions and photos at the bottom of the page right now. Lots of home builds, Bravo Company, Colt and FN rifles featured.

My vote is for the BCM. FN would also be a wise choice. Both can be had brand new and without the wait time or high price tag of the Colt.

Thank you all for your posts so far! Lots of valuable information, for which I am very grateful for.

I've been tossing around the idea of building one, as well. In fact I've gone so far as to assemble a list of parts, totalling to a shade under $650, give or take a bit. However, that being said, the most I've ever done is field stripping a Walther P22. I've never assembled something like this from the ground up. Therefor I'm somewhat in doubt of my own abilities. After all I would think it would be reasonable to be weary of something that could potentially explode in your face.
