Here is the M-16 WannBe:

Build from:
MGO Lower by CC Gunworks
Vietnam era parts kit from Sportsmen's Guide (Similar to this.)
20" Heavy Barrel from a Grand Rapids Gun Show
New DPMS Sring kit from Midway

Okay, here's my build. Surplus M16A1 upper that I got from a guy here on the Equipment Exchange, a Nodak Spud lower and hardware I scored at a local gunshop. Mine's set up pretty much like my issue M16A1 from the 80's. I have a Rock Rover match trigger in there though which I guess doesn't look exactly right.

Hi VSelph, I have some questions for your M203 on your retro rifle.  Where did you get the 37mm launcher at, and where did you get the mounting system for it? I am currently building a 603 M16A1 and really like the 203 look.

Thanks in advance

Had some of the early retro guns out today and shot a picture of the cast FSBs.

From left to right (the first has the proto FSB created here by a forum member (iirc - ZRex04), the rest are Colt cast FSBs)
- replica prototype AR15 with AR10 handguards, a second replica prototype AR15 with bakelite handguards, 601, 601, 602, and 604.

My attempt at a Retro A-1 that I had back in the 70's,. Nodak upper, 80% lower, pencil barrel, surplus butt stock and hand guards and A1 grip.

RTI parts kit with JD Machine lower with Green Mountain Barrel. Not correct but prefer the prong flash hider look
Just waiting on a NoDak (like everyone else )

Got the upper off the EE during the panic, waited patiently and received 2 Nodak A1 lowers, and here is the first completed project:

As you can see, RBRD hasn't hit too bad, yet. I am presently happy with a plain old non-correct DPMS LPK.

Build 2, based around a kit I got from SG during the same period, will be posted at a later date.

On a business trip in NM and ran into this in a store.  Appears to be a second generation Japanese-made 3x20.  Late 70s?

I had to buy it.  Too bad that consisted of buying the rifle it was attached to.

Should be able to dump the rifle and end up with a free scope.

Nehi, Wow, your Upper definitely has that BTDT look.  Now you need to get a NoDak Lower and give it the BTDT treatment.  Then it'll look like an old Warhorse.

NDS does have some XM16E1 Black "Blem's" in stock right now, if your interested.  I know because I just got one.

Yeah, I probably will eventually get a Nodak lower.  I really don't know how I can get the anodizing to chip so it matches the upper though

My 603 homage. It is not all authentic/pure, but it was the best I could do currently within my budget. I really wanted a shooter.
This is a DTI barrel. He had one left in stock from a special order with the non f marked front site, I jumped on it.

I have to give a big thanks to gordog He helped me with getting my lower parts kit sprayed with Norrell's, he did this for free and I posted something in PIF thread. He is a great member who is very helpful. Also boywonder777 helped me with some parts, and easily 100 questions. I also talked to morg and several others who never hesitated to put up with my inquires.

I am very happy with my first attempt into retro land. I couldn't have done it without all the help.
I am now squirrelling more parts for another 603, OlGunner  just gave me a type d stock. This place is really something special. I admit I go to GD, but you RETRO guys have infected me with RBRD.

Edit: I am slow

My a1. Left the upper and furniture as it was out if the box. Used the ar15sport lightweight barrel. American spirit arms lower and bolt. Cmmg lower parts kit. 3 prong flash hider. Threw a bad lever on it since I like them.

Had this Colt Gov't Model A2 for the past 20 odd years. Been in a case in the closet for about 18 years. Getting back into some sport shooting and with all the new widgets for these guns got some stock pics and upgraded pics. Intend on being able to put the gun back original if / when I would want.

With original Colt magazine / furniture (pictures not the best):

Added MOE fore end, Miad grip, sling attachment, sling, grip pod, Vltor stock and Colt 4x20 that originally came with the gun:

XM16E1 Retro

Authentic original M16 upper with original hardware
Non trapdoor stock with hinged sling mount
gloss black furniture
3 prong flash hider
XM3 bipod with 1st generation case (cleaning kit before trap door)
Brass deflector
Sight adjustment tool (4 prong)
1:12 pencil barrel
Partial bridge lower
Straight 20rd mag (also waffle mag that was more for 601)
Original Colt 3x20 scope. First generation with thin crosshairs
Early OEG (red dot)
M7 bayonet with M8A1 scabbard
NiB BCG (originals were chrome, so NiB would be closest for looks)

Just finished my GAU build: originally was going to do both a GAU 5a & 5a/a. Not much time on my hands anymore, so I just combined my 5a lower to my 5a/a upper. It was kinda a disappointment to me due to the lower / upper gap, but she shoots like a champ, and the build was fun. She's not really 100% accurate on one specific model, but shines with the spirit of USAF frankencarbines

Hello All long time lurker but just decided to find an email other than Gmail to sign up finally. Have built quite a few retros for myself and others off the information provided on this incredible site. THANK YOU ALL for the help, I know there are many others besides myself. Here is a quick shot of a few of my retros right now. I know the A2 isn't all that retro however with the M4's out now anything with a carry handle and a .625 barrel is retro to me. I'm just finishing up with my XM177E2 except for the flash hider (second pic showing upper refinish). I have it SBR'd already but am hoping to get a replica 4.5" very soon. The C7 was bought just as you see minus furniture and lower (kept in the Canada theme with the green)...actually traded it for a 16" palmetto M4 upper straight across and is 100% colt marked upper. The 605 was picked up at a local gun show for 200 bucks, it is a true rifle gas system and has no barrel markings, chrome carrier without serrations, but has C on the site base and colt proof by the chamber door. Im contemplating a 601 & 603 build very soon. I like to stay busy. AND BROKE! Cheers guys!

TheStinger, nice looking collection you have there.

I like your 605, but, I would send that Upper Half to John Thomas, to have the barrel cut back to the front of the FSB, like a true 605.  That way he can make sure it'll operate properly.

Thank you, I will have it cut back and gas port re sized properly at some point for now it runs fine and I don't shoot it that much, the A2 has become my rely on weapon and will likely be re-configured to resemble a 652 (its a mid gas 16" barrel so I can only resemble). Just managed to find a slickside small hole today for that project. Never enough money and safe space!
This was last summer when I started the refurb on the 605

Just finishing up my (as close as possible) 652 clone minus the 14" barrel. I used a 16 mid length gas to get the same barrel look, waiting on another A1 grip and rear site kit to show in the mail.

I started with one of the recent A1 kits and a new production A1 barrel.

Mocked it up

And shipped it out to John Thomas at Retro Arms Works to pin the FSB and finish the upper.

Here's how it looked when I got it back, just like it's supposed to!

And the whole thing as she currently sits.  Saving some pennies for a proper NDS lower that I can get marked up like a Hydramatic.

Well, i bought a PWA stripped lower and ...i caught the retro bug. So here is my latest build.

Ok...time for a pic dump. Here's my XM177E2 clone I have been working on. I have a BCG and a tear drop forward assist on the way but other than that its done!

ETA: this is also probably the lightest build I have done at ~5.6lbs.

The upper and lower needed to be refinished so I duracoated them...

After:

My little retro style DOE 9mm, finished most the fab work on the sight, handguard cap and hand stop plate.  I’ll change the upper from the C7 to correct upper with 9mm gas deflector.  Meet to machine the sling swivel in as well.
