I am going to look at some rifles and components in the morning and possible take home my first (civilian) AR15. I previously posted on this site about a gentlemen offering an M4 style, AR15 platform on my choice of a RRA or DPMS lower. I spoke with him again today for some follow up and he said that the remainder of the weapon would be primarily of FN components. He said that he has a contact which receives military overruns. He sounds very competent, articulate and says he takes great pride in putting together high quality rifles. I only know of one person who has purchased from him and he has been satisfied. I thought FN only did military work – Could these other components really be from FN? How do I know? If the lower is stamped “5.56” how do I know the upper and barrel are also 5.56 and not .223? What else should I be looking for to ensure I buy a quality product? Short of range time is there any sort of quality check I can perform?

Sorry for the late posting. Thanks in advance for any input.

I agree I have been around a while and have looked for FN parts with no luck. I do have some FN magazines though but about all I can find. I hate to say it but hardly nothing would get past us on this site.

you will not get fn parts unless they are stolen, demil/broken/rejected

or whatever else you can think of

While reviewing the firearms, how can I confirm that the parts are or "are not" FN?
Also, just so I am clear, you all are not suggesting that FN parts are of poor quality, but simply that these rifles are unlikely to contain FN components - right?

Thanks.

fn makes parts/weapons for the us military and in their contract it states they cannot sell parts/firearms to civilians.

so yes, fn is good to go.

I can get a FEW FN parts, mostly BBLs, occasionally a upper sans bolt/carrier/CH and these are from A2 uppers that were sold off when they went to the M4. As far as ALL the parts...............He's pulling a fast one most likely.

believe it or not FN has quietly made uppers and other parts available to their LE distributors.

So then what is the deal here in your opinion? This guy seems like a nice older gentleman, he was not pushy for a sale, but rather attempted to answer all question posed. Could he be mistaken about the FN parts? Could he be getting these parts as overruns or through some other legitimate mechanism? Or should I simply move on and buy the Stag Model 2 off the shelf as I previously planned? I am typically not naive in most manners, but I am new to the AR world and this guy seemed to offer a pretty good deal - Decent price, local transaction and less formal than some other mediums. Do you guys have any other thoughts on this? Is this a rip off or accidental misinformation for a builder?

Thanks again.

He very well might think he is getting real FN parts, but the truth is, he's probably not. I get suspect when he say it's all FN because I don't see complete FN uppers for sale, especially on a reliable basis.

Overruns?  What happened to the idea the military was using everything as fast as it could be made?  I didn't know there was a surplus market for new rifle/carbine parts.  You'd think the banner guys with contacts in the .mil would take the first crack at that shit, not some old man that "knows a guy".

Stolen or Chinese?  This should be a poll!

Funny, the shop at Ft.Dix has made 1,000's for FN A2's into M4's. Lower has A2 milled off and M4 stamped on.
Surplus FN A2 uppers are on the market. But most were sold three years ago. Upper will be marked FN. Barrels are marked FNMI MP 5.56 NATO 1/7.
Yes, FN can't sell AR-15's to the commercial market. But they can sell to other Gov.,LEO's and the like. The uppers and other parts are surplus by the Gov.

Check EE, you can find FN parts.

Purchased from Sherluk. I wanted a reasonably priced 11.5 upper; it turned out to be a great shooter for less than $300. I'm still keeping it, however, I don't think this is a FN upper receiver as the gentlemen advised:

Um, no you can't.  Even though they say that they get FN parts.  That's what made me look else where.
