I re-assemble my rifle yesterday and have a question about the extractor. When looking at it bolt headon, the extractor doesn't complete a perfect circle.  It kinda have an indentation in. Is this normal. Also when they say to test the tension of the extractor spring, my is very tight without any movement when I push it in, is that what I am suppose to look for?

Attach is a picture of what I am talking about.

That looks fine.  The extractor is under spring tension to hold a case against the bolt face.  That means it has to press against the case to hold it, so it needs to have a little more travel than just "closing the circle" on the bolt face.

Are you having any extractor problems? The reason it's lower at that point is to make sure it ends up in the case groove and it should be tight so it does not just jump out under the extractor action. If you not having a extractor problem all is fine.

No, Just taking apart and reassemble for the 1st time. I am a newbie at this and it's very cold/raining out here in Ohio for the last 2 months so I have't even gone out and shoot that many time since getting the rifle. Thanks for all your help. One more question unrelated to this. When I reassemble the upper with the lower, should I cock the hammer or leave it uncock and just join the two parts.

There is no need to de-cock your AR.

You'll also find it very difficult to close the rifle back up with the hammer lowered.  It goes back together nicely with the hammer cocked.
