I decided to see if altering the tips of some cheap ammo, in this case it is Monarch 55 gr. from Academy, would cause the bullets to start trying to reverse themselves earlier. It was raining a bit and cold so I only fired 5 shots each of altered/unaltered ammo into a clay bank behind my house. From this limited test I would say yes there is some effect. I went back to my bench and fired 5 more altered rounds at my 50 yard target and quickly put 5 rounds downrange getting a 1.5 inch group so at least to 50 yards accuracy isn't hurt that badly. To alter the tips I took a pair of side cutters and squeezed just hard enough to get noticable dents on both sides of the bullet a bit down from the tip and not drastically change the shape of the bullet. I wasn't going to dig in the rain to recover the bullets so when it gets nicer outside I will do a wet newsprint test. I also shot some Brown Bear 62 grain BTHP to find it functions and is accurate in my rifle. I only fired 20 rounds but it seems this ammo leaves a good amount of powder fouling.
