I have an EO-Tech sight on a Bushmaster M4 style entry rifle. The other day it was colder than its been in our area for a while and the rifle was in my truck for about an hour before I began shooting it. I put ten rounds though it and the sight turned off. The only was I was able to get the sight back on was to take the batteries out for about 5min and replace with fresh AA energizer batteries. The EO-Tech is just the standard AA model w/o NV compatible. what causes this? and what kind of batteries does everyone use in theirs, the paperwork that came with the sight said to use energizers. but it also talks about lithium for colder weather?  Any advise would be great. Thanks.

The reason your Eotech turned off was because of low voltage caused by cold weather.  When batteries are cold it reduces the chemical reaction that produces electricity.  If you have a flashlight handy, you will notice that the light will be weak until the batteries are warmed up.

I use only Lithium AA's (aka "photo batteries") in my 512's and 552's.

Not only that, but cold can damage the alkalines permanently too.

get lithiums, it should solve your problems

Yep, and if I'm not mistaken they won't drain if your not using them either.

LEDs are actually brighter when they are cold, up to 160% brighter.

As others have stated, get and use Lithiums. Note however that the Lithium battery will negate the flashing, low battery power signal.

The EOTech eats batteries quickly. I have never been able to get more than 400 hours out of any on my 552's, no matter what the battery.
Also be aware that the battery box may not be sealed, and corrosion can/ will occur within.
Do some regular PM and you will be GTG.

I would recommend that you just get a Aimpoint.  The battery for the aimpoint will last 10 times longer than any battery in the eotech and the battery cost much less than any set of lithiums that you could buy for the eotech.  I have had my Aimpoint in very cold weather and never had any problems.  I know of people who have had their aimpoints constantly on for over a year now and they are still running strong.  Sounds like an easy solution to me.

Just for the record I only spent 400 total for my ML2 and it was from a local gun shop no special deal and new in box.  That same dealer could have sold me an Eotech for around 325 if I remember correctly, but i dont remember what model of batteries that one would have used.  Honestly i dont think that there is anyting wrong with eotech i just found that my eyes can focus quicker on one single dot rather than all the redness that the eotech emits.  also for some reason i could focus better with both eyes open with the aimpoint than the eotech.  I just have to give everyone with eotechs hell because i chose to buy the aimpoint.  you know how it goes.  but i will agree that the eotech is a good sight and saves you about 75-100 dollars when it comes to building a budget rifle.
