Does anyone know how effective the original "dum-dum" bullets (the ones developed at the Dum Dum arsenal in India) were? If they were indeed effective (with similar effects to modern hollowpoints), what exactly was done to them? I have read that notches were cut into the noses to promote expansion. If that was indeed true, I would imagine that the design must have been pretty crude by today's standards. Was the .303 cartridge that much better with them?

Just curious.

here's a good wiki article: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dum_dum

I believe the original "dum dum" was a jacketed soft point, but there is controversy.
