My Bushmaster with a Jewell trigger started double firing yesterday. This has never happened before. I've have put about 6,000 rounds through the rifle since the Jewell was installed in 2002. I keep the gun squeaky clean and all other parts are stock. I typically shoot LC 55-grain ammo. I took the trigger through the standard safety checks and it passed. My first instinct is to blame the trigger (time to retune) but I wanted to know if a worn firing pin could also cause this problem, although it looks just fine when performing a visual inspection. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I'll probably give Jewell Triggers a call and get their take |

I had that problem with my RRA two stage... It came from the factory set at 5.25 pounds (at my request) after 500 rounds I started having double fires. I checked the trigger and it had backed off to 2.5 pounds. the slight recoil along with me resetting the trigger during recoil was causing the problem. I had to replace the trigger due to agency policy. You might be on the right track with retuning the trigger, if you hammer spring is on properly. |

The jewel trigger was designed for a 4.6lb setting (CMP legal limit). It can be set much lower than this, but you will end up bump firing the rifle instead. Take the hammer spring leg up a few clicks on the star to add some more tension, and see if the problem goes away. P.S. let me guess, you where bench firing the rifle when it happened. |
| Thanks for the replies and suggestions. The hammer spring is installed correctly. I did call Jewell Triggers and their thought was that the sear engagement needed adjusting (increasing), so I increased that and I also took the advice to increase the first stage pull. So, I'll take it out to the range with my assortment of adjustment tools and hex wrenches this weekend and see if it is behaving. Yes, it was doing this while being bench fired. It was quite a surprise to hear the double kabooms! |
Imagine your surprise if the police show up and you end up in jail: www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=6&t=507483 There seems to be a run of this problem of late and it really worries me. I never had one of my guns do this but we see people having this issue way too much. If it is too easy to get multiple rounds from one pull, then that is a dangerous thing for the legality of ARs in general. |
