Nothing, it does allow the barrel to cool fater, as well as lightens it. Some also claim it adds ridgity making for less barrel whip.

Melvin did mine, the dimple layout is a KAC patent but he does there barrels and has permission. I have a SS middy that was dimpled past the fsb and profiled to .675 under the handguards for weight savings. It's more novelty than anything considering benefit per money spent, I probably would not consider doing it again.
