Hey everybody,

I have bent the detent spring in the butt stock of my AR. I was able to straighten the spring enough to put it back in the rifle. Will this affect the rifle? What is the purose of the detent and detent spring.

I just got it last Friday, and fired it for the first time on Saturday.

First off, Welcome to the site!!!

If the spring and detent that you have in question is the one that the butt stock holds into the back of the receiver, then they are to retain/tension the rear take down pin.

The spring should be fine straightened out as long as long as you can drift/move the rear take down pin over to unlock the upper from the lower, it will stay locked without moving to the unlocked position by it’s self, and the pin does not come out/fall out of the receiver when moved to the unlocked position.

Thank-you for the info. I don't belive it will be a problem, now that I know what it does.
I will pick-up a replacement just in case.

Cheers Rik

I have had a bent detent spring in one rifle for 15 years without any problems.
