I have a preban 20" A2 that I want cut down to a dissy. Who is Kurt and what makes him the barrel cutter extrordinaire? Does anyone else come highly recomended as a barrel cutter?

dont cut it down. you will have jams. the dissapators sight radius is standard a2 but the gas port is located further back than the a2. you will ruin your upper

Really? I thought that the A2 gas tube length worked better than the shorter tube in a dissy.

if just opening up the port a little was good for the long term i doubt bushmaster would have changed the location of the port. i would think if o.e.m. did it this way they did it for a reason. good luck

I believe they did it because of logistical reasons only, as the Dissy uses the same barrel & gas port as the regular carbine now.

I've done it a bunch of times(a few in the last couple weeks). You just need to open the gas port up a bit.....

+1...........go for it.

What about the chrome lining?  Would it be prone to chipping or flaking after it is cut?

Thanks

Kurt is Kurt Wala ownwer of Kurt's Kustom and AR smith extrodinare (among other things).  He runs a shop in the swamps of FL, a website, and has his own forum in the Industry section of this site (near the bottom of the Industry page)

and why is he the barrel cutting guru?

Because he's done it for so long.  I've had him do barrel work for me, as has Troy and many of the other 'old timers'.  For a while if you wanted a lightweight or an A2 profile you HAD to send it to Kurt.

Kurt is Kurt V. Wala of Kurt's Kustom Firearms and asking why people consider him an expert on barrel cutting is like asking why people consider Bill Gates to be an expert on making lots of money.
