Help me move this to a more relevant thread if there is one.. Also, teach me to embed the image versus adding the link :)

I am a new AR15 owner and like others, have been researching every component in order to get the best quality for the most reasonable price. When it came to a case, I looked into the Pelican case versus Plano. Pelican seems superior, but costs about twice what the Plano case costs. The Pelican has solid foam that must be custom cut, and thus, provides a tight/custom fit. The Plano has the pull-out squares that allow for easy sizing but you are left with what looks like a Minecraft, 8 bit graphics versus the smooth, angle lines a custom cut can have. I also feel like, over time, that the pull-out squares are likely going to start to tear with many rifle insertions/removals from the case.

So, here was my solution. I fitted my Plano case and then placed a silk(ish?) cloth over the top of the foam. I pushed the rifle into the foam and tucked the edges of the cloth around the foam at the sides of the case. I believe this will protect the pull-out foam squares, and it looks pretty nice.

Let me know what you think. If you like the idea, share it.

I've used pick and pluck for a bunch of stuff.  Mostly pro audio/lighting transport cases.  For frequent in/out, yes the pick and pluck tears and ends up nasty looking.  I like your solution...

I've been custom cutting my own foam for 30 years.  IT guy, I have access to lots of chunks of foam that end up in the dumpster eventually.

My first case was a Bulldog hybrid case that was pre-cut for a standard carbine with a carry handle, I re-cut to accommodate my optic which worked fine, til I added a magnifier, then re-cut it for that. Then added a QD bipod so I cut it again. And again when I changed out the standard handguards and FSB for a free float rail.
I just make too many changes to my ARs to settle on a permanent configuration, so a 'custom cut' case just doesn't work for me.

I like what the OP has done, makes a budget case look top tier and probably keeps the pluck foam from snagging & tearing.

I have heard people using spray adhesive on the pluck foam once you have the final shape done. This will eliminate it coming apart on its own.

Also, kinda looks like your rifle is in a casket
