Newbe to the forum but not to AR's. I've built a few AR's and love to do this myself from scratch, I've never done the color fill on a lower before and I just got a Spikes with the color already filled in on the safety, semi and auto fire markings. I thought this would be a nice touch to do on the spider as well. I checked out Youtube's how to's and it seemed pretty easy, here's where I made my first mistake. I watched a couple of "kids" do it with finger nail polish and polish remover, it looked good in the video, so I tried that and the white polish does look good on the spider but the surounding areas now have a faded look to them so I'm guessing that the finger nail polish remover I used to take off the extra polish on the lower took off the black coating as well.

Here my question, does anyone know exactly what color the black coating is on a lower? I'd like to try and make it look like the rest of the lower if possable. I'd even be happy to go back to what I had before the white spider.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Next time I'll try that instead, any ideas on how to touch up the lighten black areas?

Apply some CLP Breakfree.
Usually, the dull areas are simply dry of lube and that causes the color difference.

A better way to fill lettering is the same as used by gunsmiths and military armorers.
Lacquer Stik is sold by Brownell's and comes in several colors.
It's paint in a solid form.

Just scrape the end to expose fresh material and rub it into the lettering.
Let dry a few minutes, then use a little solvent like lacquer thinner or mineral oil on a rag or paper towel to remove the excess, leaving the stamps full.
Let dry for 30 minutes or so, then apply a light coat of CLP.
This is permanent unless you want it out, in which case you remove it with lacquer thinner and a toothbrush.

Now I really feel like a moron! I sell MRO products for a living to production plants, truck fleets and so on. One of the many items I sell is lacquer paint pens, these are the exact same as the ones you have listed from Brownells just a different lable. This is truely what forum are all about, people helping people. Thanks a million dfariswheel.
